A person on a face book group stating that he was getting triggered this week because the question came up who would be who: Cap or Superman.
The best superhero stories are the one’s where they are willing to sacrifice there own lives.
Superman dying for the cause
Black Widow and Hawkeye in End Game
Captain America trying to rescue his friend from himself at the cost of his own life and leadership of the team.
Today we are going to look at one of the heroes of the faith that was willing to make an insane sacrifice for his faith.
His story was an early example what God would do for us during the first Easter we will celebrate in a few weeks.

The Story

Gen 22:1-8
Genesis 22:1–8 ESV
1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
Exp :
v.1 - Why does God need to test Abraham? Shouldn’t we describe this test as in humane?
Remember that Issac was the son of the promise Gen 12
Abraham has a unique role in the plan of God.
Would Abraham be able to shoulder of the responsibility of God’s plan for him.
The most difficult and dangerous training is reserved for our elite warriors.
Tests are not given before the teacher has prepared the student - 1 Cor 10:13
Abhram is to travel and sacrifice his son at the place that would become the sight of Solomon’s temple mount, near where Jesus would be crucifed on Easter, what is today the same rock of the Dome of the Rock.
Astoundingly Abraham Obeys
This tells a couple of thingss: Abraham had great faith
The state of the world during this time period.
Though called an abomination for the Jews, child sacrifice is practiced during this time by the pagan nations.
Imagine his state of mind?
I am glad I am not Abraham, because I honestly dont think I could do it.
His faith: v. 5, v. 8
Ill
Bible’s story to AJ.
Wondering how this book was going to go about it/suprised it included it.
Noticing how zoned into the story he was.
Asking him what he thought and if he had any question.
Dealing with the challenges of my own.
App:
This is a unique, qualified, and no longer applicable circumstances in faith. I beleive that God will never ask any else to do this.
But Dover Chapel, are you willing to allow your faith to direct you to serve the world through self-sacrice?
We will see that Abraham’s obdience opened the way for Christ.
Will God be able to be used of God in this world today as a part of his elite and special team of beleivers? Will you be the hero he can make you into?

The Climax

Genesis 22:9–12 ESV
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
Exp:
It’s incredible to me how Abraham just obeys. But that’s what he has done.
He has the altar prepared and his son bound on the altar. The moment he grasps his knife, the test if finally over.
It must have been like a running a PT test without seeing the finish line with the determination to just go until you passout.
God has never intended for Abraham to kill Issac. He has intended to graduate Abraham from his indoctrination, his pipeline, his training. His new tab is conferred and the promise of God is confirmed on him again.
Ill: Makeing the Cut
App: Abhraham’s faith in God caused him to be used by God. He became a hero of the faith and is spiritual ancestor of all of us who beleive. Will you follow in the example of your heritiage?

The Finale (Just a foretaste)

Genesis 22:13–18 ESV
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” 15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
Exp:
Just as Abraham had beleived God provided the sacrifice.
In our most dire times of need, when we have faith, God will provide what we need.
God confirms the blessing he gave to Abraham in Gen 12, several years earlier.
His faith empowered him to obey God’s leading. His obedience was a great service to the world. For his line came Jesus, who was the lamb slain for the world.
Application (Response)
Dover Chapel, did you know that our Lord did for us what we couldn’t do for oursleves.
Abraham and Issace was an early shadow of God and his Son Jesus. Remember what John says,
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus fullfilled the sacrifice necessary for us. Will will celebrate that this Good Friday!
He has given you access to God and spiritual heritage of Abraham to serve the world through obedience to him.
God, you Father, was the greatest hero of them all. Will you be like him?
He isn’t asking you to sacrifice your son. That’s already taken care of. But will you beleive and obey him for how he wants you to serve the world today?
