Hebrews 10:1-18
Hebrews 10:1-18
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ”
When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Hebrews: An Introduction and Commentary (iii) His Offering of Himself for Others (10:1–18)
It might be thought that the writer has sufficiently proved his point
The law is a shadow, and as Mike talked about, a shadow is nothing. It has no substance to itself.
But a shadow also is not a detailed replica
It only gives a rough outline
We learn things about the shadow when we understand the reality
That we did not understand with the shadow alone
Misleading Shadow Pics 1-3
When we have only the shadow, we don’t see the reality clearly
But when we understand the reality, we better understand the shadow
Verse 1-4
At the end of chapter 9, the author says in verse 26 that Christ has come to offer himself once to put away all sin
So we have the reality, now, at the beginning of chapter 10, we are going to see what that means for the shadow
And he says, if the sacrifices actually worked to perfect the people, you wouldn’t have to keep doing offerings
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results
He says the offerings happen over and over, and yet they never actually take away sin
And if we think about that, that seems really obvious to us
But let me suggest this morning that its so obvious to us because we actually know the reality
So we see the shadow more clearly

quoted from Psalm 40
Psalm 40 is a Psalm of Lament
In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.
Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.”
In Psalms it says ear, but here in Hebrews he speaks of a body
Does the author misquote here?
Wouldn’t count when I was in AWANA
Reminder that the Holy Spirit both inspired David and Inspired the author of Hebrews
Schreiner remarks that what we see here is a part, standing in for the whole
Verbal Plenary Inspiration
Dual authorship
David had a purpose in wriing, and a context from which he wrote
But the Spirit had a purpose in inspiration, and a different context to inspire
Both are true.
Vs 10-18
Back to insanity
Christ work is final and finished
quotes from Jeremiah 31
If you are sick, the medicine bottle is a reminder that your sickness remains.
Everyday, as you go back to the bottle, back to the bottle, it is evidence that your need remains
But once you are healed, the bottle is a reminder that the medicine has done its work
The fact that the Israelites returned day after day to offer sacrifices, and that the High priest entered the Holy of Holies year after year, was a constant reminder that the disease of sin had not been cured
Verse 18 tells us that through the blood of Christ, we have been cured. The cross and the empty grave reminds us that we are cured.
Application
Application
That mistake that you made that your brain won’t let go of
That sin that you fight against and lose the battle
Are covered by a single sacrifice
The blood of Jesus is better than the blood of bulls or goats
Your access to God is not impeded
Come, lay your worries down at the High Priest’s feet
Come before the one who loves you and made you whole
