What Are You Hungry For?

Are you hungry today?
Physically
Its 6:30
For some its one of your days to fast as we are journeying as a church to fast
Maybe a long and busy day and had to skip lunch
Nagging pain in your stomach
Or maybe your Soul
Is there something nagging in your soul
Reminding you that something is missing, you aren’t full.
What are you hungry for?
Things that fill you up, but will soon leave you empty?
Parallel to Daniel Diet
Always being empty when eating veggies.
Or Jesus who will fill you up and you will never hunger and thirst again?
Like eating a big Tomahawk Ribeye
Food will leave you Empty, Faith will Fulfill you
John 6:22-27
22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
They woke up looking for Jesus
It was breakfast time...
They looked and saw the boat on the other side that the disciples left in
But didn’t see Jesus
So, they hop in and go to Capernaum
25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw (Understood) the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled (Satisfied/Fattened). 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
They didn't understand the significance of what Jesus did with the feeding,
So, He didn’t respond to their questions of when he arrived on the other side or share of the miracle of Him walking on the water.
They wouldn’t be able to comprehend it.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Thomas explaining the speed of light
I can’t comprehend their method, much less how they actually figured it out.
He had that moment on the water with the winds and waves crashing to grow the faith of the Disciples
If He shared it with the group now, it would have confused them, not grown their faith.
They would have been left again focusing on the practical and not the eternal
He communicates to them what they can understand (V:27)
They labored for Food
They went on a search for Jesus in their village
Didn't find Him
Hopped on a boat that wasn’t theirs
Made it to the other side
ALL for Something Temporal
What do you labor for?
Laboring for Worth
Do you work hard to portray the right image in your flesh
to be accepted
To have the right look or style
so that your feed pops in just the right way that people would be interested
So that you will feel valued
Psalm 146:3&5
3 Don’t put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there. 5 But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.
Friends are good
James 5:16-20
For encouragement
For Accountability
For strengthening
Laboring for Wealth
Is is a position
a status
a dollar amount in bank account
A certain offer letter for a job or deal
Matthew 6:19-21
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Laboring for Welfare
Basic Necessities- Food, Housing, Clothes
Matthew 6:31-34
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Labor and put your time and trust in Him
John 6:27
Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Food often time get’s my attention
Im often no better than them
Jesus Uses the food metaphor to get our attention
John 4:13-14- (Woman at the Well)
“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
To the Believer
You have seen and experienced this emptiness and then being filled
Do you have to maybe readjust your focus
Maybe you have lost sight
He wants all of you
To the unbeliever
Walking through life coming up short/empty
Jesus doesn’t want you at the end of the day feeling
Hungry/Hung over/Hurting
Jesus wants to fill you as you put your faith fully in Him
John 6:28-29
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
2. He wants your heart not your works
Their perspective is still focused on the physical
As Good Jewish people they thought there was a work or a sacrifice that was associated with a work of the Lord
Olivia working to attain a treat
Romans 9:31-33
31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Remember he wants your heart not your works...
He was teaching them the new...
It is a circumcision of the heart
He wants you to commit and surrender it all to him....
Not fulfill a task that makes you feel like you have accomplished it.
Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
3. He wants you to feats on His Goodness
John 6:30-40
30 Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?
The miracle of the feeding of the 5000 wasn’t sufficient to get their attention
All too often in my life I pray and ask God...”Lord show up” “show yourself to me”
And I totally miss the work the Lord is doing
Selah- Pause, Meditate, Reflect
Encourage you to spend time in His word daily hear from him
Journal those moments when it’s undeniable He is at work.
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ” 32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Manna
It was a daily gift from God
It was exactly what they needed for the day to fill them up and give them life
God provided it as a free gift for all
It was a gift without strings attached
No burdens associated
They didn’t need to work to receive
They didn’t need to work to store it (Barns or Clio's)
In fact God had any extra go bad each day, so they would learn to depend on Him and not their works.
34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” 35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.
The Same is true of Jesus
We get to enjoy daily relationship with Him
He provides all we need for each day
Relationship with him is not burdensome or work
We all have experienced burdensome relationships....He is not
Matthew 11:28-30
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
He is the lifter of our Burdens
37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Are you Hungry?
He wants you to feast on His Goodness...
This world will leave your Hungry
Wanting more
Never satisfied
Jesus wants you to have a full life as you put your complete trust in Him
John 10:7-10
7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
