John 21:1-25
Introduction
Broken down into a few different sections:
v. 1-14 - appears to the 7 disciplesV. 15-19 - final interaction with Peterv. 20-24 - final clarification regarding Johnv. 25 - conclusion
John 21:1-14
v. 1 - after this…weeklong Festival of Unleavened Bread is over. Disciples have gone back to Galilee.v. 2 - sons of Zebedee - James and JohnPartners with Peter in fishing before called by Jesus (Luke 5:10)v. 3 - night - preferable time to fish…fresh to sell at morning marketv. 7 - John’s self-identificationv. 11 - 153…numerous attempts to interpret this number symbolically. It is not symbolic.
John 21:15-19
v. 15. - more than theseThese? Fish? Other disciples?I think he is referring to the fish. They have gone back to their old life. This is a pivotal moment for Peter. Will you move forward with Jesus or go back to your old life.Hebrews, Galatians Love - Peter uses phileo all 3x.Jesus uses agapao first 2x, then switches to phileoTwo words often used interchangeably. Likely not make much out of this.But Peter sees nuance between the two.2 Peter 1:7Faith is a battle of the Loves of the heart. Where will you place your affection?This is the restoration of Peter. Why is Peter grieved after Jesus asks the third time?
