The Danger of Sin’s Persuasiveness

Introduction

The Great Wall of China is a gigantic structure which cost an immense amount of money and labor. When it was finished, it appeared impregnable. But the enemy breached it. Not by breaking it down or going around it. They did it by bribing the gatekeepers.
Harry Emerson Fosdick.
A good defense is hard to come by.
It takes work and effort, diligence to maintain it.
But a good defense is necessary for our walk in this life.
We considered last week, the first few verses of Genesis 34 and saw the despicable sin of Shechem as he gave way to his sinful lusts and abused Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah.
We segwayed into considering the destructive nature of sin and its dark power to persuade. We were confronted, as we often are and need to be, with the danger of sin and the spiritual warfare that we find ourselves in.
Today, we take a look at some defenses we have to protect us in the face of this danger that we confront on a daily basis.

Sermon Body

1. The Defense of God’s Power.

Defenses against the deceitfulness of sin (Not exhaustive and in no particular order)

a. Defense of War Mentality - Our first defense is in accepting the reality that I have already mentioned; we are in a war.

i. Peter makes a declaration in 1 Peter 2:11 that reveals the seriousness of this issue.
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
ii. We are in a war for our souls. We are in a battle for the very life, existence, and welfare of our souls. Remember, souls being our very existence and life. We ARE souls and cannot exist without it. We are not flesh that has a soul. We are SOUL that is housed in flesh. We can live without the flesh but we are soul. It is for the soul that we find ourselves in a fierce battle for.
iii. A story from the Revolutionary War reveals the danger of what happens when we fail to live with a wartime mentality when we are in the middle of a war.
During the Revolutionary War, a loyalist spy appeared at the headquarters of Hessian commander Colonel Johann Rall, carrying an urgent message. General George Washington and his Continental army had secretly crossed the Delaware River that morning and were advancing on Trenton, New Jersey where the Hessians were encamped. The spy was denied an audience with the commander and instead wrote his message on a piece of paper. A porter took the note to the Hessian colonel, but because Rall was involved in a poker game he stuffed the unread note into his pocket. When the guards at the Hessian camp began firing their muskets in a futile attempt to stop Washington's army, Rall was still playing cards.
Without time to organize, the Hessian army was captured. The battle occurred the day after Christmas, 1776, giving the colonists a late present--their first major victory of the war.
Today in the Word, MBI, October, 1991, p. 21.
iv. Rall’s failure to keep alert and aware in the midst of war led to his defeat and fall.
v. The same is true of us on a daily basis. If we stop viewing life through a war time mentality, we will grow complacent and the adversary will creep in and we will be caught with our pants down, so to speak.
vi. If you sit here this morning and think that you are not in major conflict, beware….you may be more deceived by sin than you think.
1. And it may not be addictions, anger, lust, greed, etc.
2. It may be apathy and indifference.
3. The more we live for Christ, the more opposition we will face…the more lives we will be involved in….the more messy our lives will become.
4. If you are facing opposition in your life; if you are not dealing with hard things, I fear you may already be entranced in sin’s
vii. Our first defense is understanding that we are in war.
viii. It is in developing a mindset to fight that war and fight to defend and protect others from the dangers of that war.

b. Defense of Understanding - Our second defense is found in understanding the progression of sin’s persuasion and deception (again already mentioned)

i. Let me show you two examples of how this works.
ii. Genesis 3
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. [1]
iii. The Steps..
1. The thing is put in your direct gaze
a. Whether on purpose like here; Or on accident/unintentionally; Or because we are begin unwise.
b. This strengthens the point that then, we must be careful what we allow before our gaze in the first place.
c. If we never open ourselves up to certain influences and temptations, it thwarts the rest of the process.
d. Again, this is not about a legalistic standard, this is about putting self imposed boundaries in place to guard yourself from sinful influences, cutting off their power before it can take root.
2. We begin to consider the thing…
a. In this case, Satan specifically prompted them to consider the object that they were not to touch. One has to wonder if they even really bothered paying much attention to it until this point.
b. You begin to second guess, doubt, wonder about what you initially thought of thing.
c. Over time, we can come to find the arguments for giving voice to that thing appealing and we begin to drift in our thinking to adopting a sinful and wrong view.
d. We begin to reshape our thinking; adopting a view that is contrary to truth.
e. Our desires grow and our passions begin to speak more loudly than the truth we once clung to. So much so that…
“…when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate…”
3. We yield to our passions which have become truth for us.
a. Delight to the eyes
b. To be desired to make one wise
c. She Took…
d. What started as a mere glance in the direction of the tree, became a reorientation of truth and judgment of what is right and wrong.
iv. When we give sin a voice in our life; when we allow sin to have an influencing place in our life, we will begin the slow side away from truth and in the bondage of sin.
v. Second one, Turn to Joshua 7:20-21.
vi. Joshua had been commanded by God to attack and destroy Ai, destroying everything. Man, animal, and possession. Achan sinned by taking some of the wealth in secret and as a result the attack on Ai ended in defeat. Joshua grieved and lamented before God. God revealed that someone had disobeyed and taken what they were commanded not to.
vii. When it was revealed who had done this thing, Achan told Joshua…
20 And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
viii. His sinful action began as a lust, a desire in the heart to do that which God had commanded them NOT to.
ix. Understand this, sin (lust, sexual, or otherwise) do not just begin one day. They have been developing and taking hold in thoughts, in desires, in passions over time. And the more they are nursed, fed, and appealed to, the more it will take hold and it will eventually lead to sinful actions.
x. We all need the commitment of David….
Psalm 101
I Will Walk with Integrity
101 A Psalm of David.
1 I will sing of steadfast love and justice;
to you, O Lord, I will make music.
2 I will ponder the way that is blameless.
Oh when will you come to me?
I will walk with integrity of heart
within my house;
3 I will not set before my eyes
anything that is worthless.
I hate the work of those who fall away;
it shall not cling to me.
4 A perverse heart shall be far from me;
I will know nothing of evil. [2]
xi. I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless….
xii. I will know nothing of evil…
xiii. Not sure exactly when this was written…
1. But if before he fell, see the danger of what happens when we allow truth to be eroded and sinful influence in. This was a determined cry of holiness, to which he would not always hold.
2. If after, then it is a cry out of his mistake and failure. A cry that he knew where he went wrong and was determined not to do so again.
xiv. Point is, we need to learn to guard our hearts…

c. Defense of a Guarded Heart - Our Third Defense is found in guarding our hearts and guarding our exposure to sinful influences.

i. For this reason, we are told to “Guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Prov 4:23).
Proverbs 4
20 My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, (Guard you heart, some translations say)
for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil. [3]
ii. In order words, we must be careful the thoughts, images, ideas, and passions we allow ourselves to be exposed to.
1. We need to GUARD our eyes, our ears, our minds, from deceptive and dangerous influences.
2. We need to keep our view upon that which is right and true and good.
3. We allow things in our lives as “entertainment” that desensitize us to the sinfulness of sin; things that put our Savior on the cross. Why would we permit the very things that put our Savior on the cross to be a part of our regular entertainment…And we do not let it bother us.
iii. What exactly does this look like?
1. I read of illustration this week that is relevant.
2. Dashboard of car
a. Contains information you need…Speed, fuel levels, temperature, warning signs you may need
b. While you may not watch the dashboard incessantly, you are constantly aware of it.
c. Red lights indicate problem.
d. Yellow lights, one that needs your attention but may not be imminent.
e. Green, be aware, but probably good to go, right?
f. We all need to be aware of the dashboard of our souls.
g. We need to pay close attention to
i. the temperature of our souls
ii. the speed at which we are barreling through life (do we take time for God)
iii. warning lights of pride, selfishness, desires of the eyes, flesh, pride of life, fear, anger, resentment, etc.
iv. We need a constant eye and attention to our souls; to that which is compelling us, driving us, informing/instructing us, etc.
v. Do you have an eye on your soul?
vi. Are you paying attention to your desires, your convictions, your beliefs?
vii. Are you staying in dependent prayer asking the Spirit to alert you of any dangers?
viii. Are you staying in the word to keep your mind and heart sharp and tuned into truth?
ix. Are you staying connected to the body of Christ and inviting them to watch over your soul? (more on this in a bit)
iv. AW Pink
For the Christian to keep his heart… means for him to pay close attention to the direction in which his affections are moving, to discover whether the things of the world are gaining a firmer and fuller hold over him, or whether they are increasingly losing their charm for him.
v. One of the ways to battle lust/sin, limit exposure to things that would provoke lustful thoughts and desires.
vi. Why would we expose ourselves to things that parade sensual, sinful desires and actions as if they are perfectly acceptable? Why would we expose ourselves to language, conversation, and material that put our Savior on the cross and use it as our entertainment, to give us smiles and laughs as if it were acceptable and good?
vii. Why would we allow things into our lives that awake and place desires which cause us questions, ignore, and reject the God who made us, saved us, and daily graces us with his favor and love?
viii. Guard your heart! Guard what you are exposed to! Guard what you allow yourself to be exposed to, and at the first sign of thoughts or desires that are opposed to God, find out where it came from, if there is a better way to guard against it, and repent immediately!

d. Defense of Grace - A fourth defense against the deceitfulness of sin is the grace of God

i. I think, we are aware that God’s grace is our greatest defense. We often quote 2 Cor 12:9. But let me remind/tell you a few examples of how this works…

ii. The grace of God’s power at work in us

iii. Turn to Titus 2
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
iv. The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation….yes, this is true! And aren’t you grateful! God’s grace grants salvation to those who do not deserve it! This is an amazing truth I could talk about forever!
v. But I want you to notice the comma and the second part of the sentence. Let’s read it with the first part attached…for the grace of God has appeared…training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self controlled, upright, and godly lives.
vi. Did you catch this? THE GRACE OF GOD HAS APPEARED TO TRAIN US IN RENOUNCING UNGODLINESS AND WORLDLY PASSIONS AND THE GRACE OF GOD HAS APPEARED TO LIFE SELF CONTROLLED LIVES AND THE GRACE OF GOD HAS APPEARED TO HELP US LIVE UPRIGHT AND THE GRACE OF GOD HAS APPEARED TO HELP US LIVE GODLY LIVES.
vii. We are not left alone, left to our own strength or our own devices to make this happen. We have the grace of God empowering us and enabling us!

viii. The grace of an assured future…Deferred pleasure (Still Titus 2)

13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
ix. When we fix our eyes on the future God is preparing for us, when we understand the glorious delights of what He is offering for us, we are able with joy to endure the hardships of now as we DEFER our pleasure in favor of a better, more eternal one.
x. 1 Peter 1
Born Again to a Living Hope
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. [4]
xi. Our hope and focus is future, not present.
xii. The grace of what is coming is enough to sustain us now.
xiii. The grace of the future has power over the demand of now.
xiv. The grace of future has the strength to denounce the deception of sin.

xv. The Grace of authority (Still Titus 2)

15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
xvi. God has established authority over our lives for our protection and benefit. Paul exhorts Titus to exhort, rebuke with ALL authority. There is protection in righteous authority; in biblical authority.
xvii. The structure, restrictions, prohibitions, etc, are there as protections to protect us from the dangers and deceit of sin.
xviii. We need to voluntarily place ourselves under spiritual authority in our lives and invite them to correct, rebuke, teach, and protect us in our spiritual walk.
xix. One of the great dangers we face is when we purposefully or unintentionally remove ourselves from authority.
1. And I get how hard this is…especially when we have been burned by that authority or that authority has proven to be hypocritical.
2. BUT THIS IS ALSO WHY those in spiritual authority need authority and accountability.
3. Beware the danger of not welcoming and placing yourself under spiritual authority.

xx. The Grace of Escape

xxi. See also I Corinthians 10:13
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
xxii. This is one of the graces God gives. We always have the choice. We always have the option. We are never bound by the sin, the lust. We have a choice to reject it or to give in to it. Question is, which do we desire more? God or the object of our lust?
xxiii. You see, God has provided a means of escape, a means of rescue, a means of grace to defeat worldly lusts and passions before they even start and to stop them dead in their tracks.

e. Defense of Community - A Fifth defense against the deceitfulness of sin is community.

i. Galatians 6
6 [Brothers], if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.[5]
1 Thessalonians 5:14
14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. [6]
ii. We have admonishment time and time again to bear with one another, love one another, forgive one another, bear with one another, be kind to one another, etc.
iii. Life was always meant to be lived in community.
iv. Find accountability. There is great strength and help in exposing your private sins and desires and seeking counsel, mentoring, and accountability.
v. Please, I plead with you, if you struggle with lust, sexual or other, worldliness, worldly passions, or covetousness, come and see me; see my wife; find godly counsel and help. You will find no judgment, only love, compassion, and help. Expose your secret sins and lusts to someone who can come along side you as a fallen sinner living the grace of God to help you overcome! Don’t be a Shechem who had no fear of God and lived according to the base passions of his flesh with no regard for God or for others and the cost they paid.

f. Defense of Superior Pleasure - The Sixth Defense against the deceit of sin is superior pleasure

i. This week, in my morning fellowship with God, I read these words by Paul Trip based on Psalm 27:2
“When evildoers assail me
To eat up my flesh
My adversaries and foes,
It is they who stumble and fall.
Trip wrote…
I wish that it were
Peacetime
But
Right now
You can’t live that way.
Temptation is all around.
It’s a smile
A whisper
A wish
An invitation
A sword.
There’s little escape,
So little time to rest,
Evil flirts with you
But will consume your flesh.
Do you really think
You’re not at risk?
Has your enemy
Lost his power
To tempt
To seduce
To ensnare
To trap?
Do you really have
The liberty
To coast
To rest
To relax, to slide on through?
When no day is an escape
There’s seldom rest,
Evil hungers for you
To digest your flesh.
There is war being made;
Darkness and light
Truth and lie
Right and wrong
Wise and foolish
Holy and sin
God and the Devil
Demon and friend,
So there’s little escape
There’s precious little rest,
Evil lurks out there
It will eat your flesh.
This world
Is shattered glass.
It does not look
It does not do
As designed.
You are infected
With the disease.
You are flawed
From within.
Sin still lives.
It is a law
A war
A prison
A trap
A drug.
Not many roads of escape
Really not much rest
Evil sings to you
But will devour your flesh.
There is but one
Escape.
Just one thing
You can do.
Focus your eyes on
What you see.
Fix your gaze.
Look at the beauty
The treasure
The majesty
The glory
Of the Lord.
Run to the temple
Be in awe.
Be enthralled
Mediate
And remember
What’s holy
What’s eternal
What’s gorgeous
What’s true.
Bask in the beauty
It will rescue you
Because there’s little escape
There’s a famine of rest,
Evil waits for you
But will dine on your flesh.
May beauty be
Your fortress.
May glory be
your rock.
May the Lord be
your refuge
Until the war
Is over
Until you’ve arrived
At rest
Until evil has been
Crushed
And you’re home at last.
For there’s scant escape
There’s a real lack of rest,
Evil hunts for you
To consume your flesh.
ii. This is how scripture meditation, study, and application works. Here is a passage we studied together a while back and now it comes to apply to our current study in Genesis.
Psalm 27
2 When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple. [7]
iii. The defense against the enticement of the devil?
1. SUPERIOR PLEASURE IN GOD.
iv. This may well be one of the greatest defenses we have…which, I may add, is also a defense of grace because it takes grace to accomplish this…
v. The best defense we have for the allure of lust is finder a greater and better satisfaction in God alone. This is one of areas in which John Piper has been very helpful for me over the years with my study in being passionately satisfied in Christ.
vi. Again, lest I sound like a fawning school boy over John Piper, I disagree with a number of significance issues but on the issue of being passionately in love with Christ and desiring God, he has been extremely helpful.
vii. You want to defeat lust and worldly passions where they stand? Be so supremely satisfied with God that when those lusts and worldly passion present themselves, you can literally laugh at their absurdity.
viii. Look at Ephesians 5 for a moment.
ix. Give commentary as it is read….
5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Motivation – Appeal – Beauty)
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (The sin we are tempted with, that we wrestle against, KEEPS US FROM GOD – IT prevents us from dwelling intimacy with Him) 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (The POWER and ABILITY to live differently)9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (We cannot be filled by the Spirit and yet controlled by something of this world. Don’t mistake this filling with being indwelt. Saints can still wrestle with enslaving sin and be indwelt. To be FILLED is to be controlled by, under the influence of. When are lives are enslaved and held hostage, controlled by other things we are NOT filled with the Spirit. We can only be filled/controlled by one thing at a time and if it is not the Spirit, it IS something else.) 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
x. Do you see it? 1 Peter 1 says, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance but as He who called you in holy, be holy in all your conduct since you have been redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
xi. It should be our desire to please God, to know God, to be satisfied in Him. Rejecting our sin, repenting of our sin is the setting aside of those things because we have chosen to pursue a greater passion, a greater joy, a greater delight.
xii. SO PURSUE HIM ALREADY! Stop choosing to hold on to some or all of your lusts and worldly passions, and choose to pursue God, finding your total and complete satisfaction in Him and in Him alone!
xiii. You want to defeat sensual, worldly desires and lusts --- Be so supremely satisfied in God that they don’t even entice you.
xiv. As Piper would put it, defeating lust with superior pleasure – pleasure in God.
xv. When your heart and soul and mind are satisfied and saturated with Christ, when he is your delight, joy, and, pleasure, there is no room for anything else.
xvi. Take this example. Who of you has ever had a first class burger? I mean like a Five Guys (which I have not had) or a Ruby Tuesday, TGI Friday, or some place like that? Or even, who has ever had a high rated steak? An outback or Longhorn steak? GOOD RIGHT? Now, are you ever as satisfied again to go back to a McDonalds burger (no offense Deb) or a Walmart grade steak? I think not!
xvii. Point is, when you have been and are being satisfied with superior pleasure, you have no desire or longing for the inferior. And when we willingly and freely give up all things in our pursuit of God, He is shown to be the higher pursuit, of greater value than all that which we gave up and HE IS MOST GLORIFIED in us by our rejection of all things to embrace Him!
xviii. God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.
xix. So, as I have been saying over the past several weeks in our studies, PURSUE GOD. Make Him your all consuming passion. Guard your heart and refuse to allow admittance to things which pollute, rob, and destroy the singular passion for God and His glory!

· Shechem did not fear God. He allowed lust to guide his actions.
· Beware. The sin of Shechem is not new. It is prevalent and on a rampage in the world around us. If you are there, repent, reveal, and renew.
· Repent of your sin.
· Claim the defenses God has supplied.
· Renew your love for God and your passion for Him. Make Him your supreme delight and satisfaction. Gorge yourself on God so no other delights even appeal.
· May God grant you victory!
