Intro - Church war stories - Church made up of sinners
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
If = Since you have...
Encouragement in Christ
Comfort from Love
Participation in the Spirit
Affection and Sympathy
GOSPEL - Union with Christ
5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Complete my joy
Joy of a parent seeing their child do well
How? 3 ways.
Way Number 1 - Unity of Conviction (vs. 2)
Convictions bind us together even when preferences try to divide.
Same Mind
Same Love
Full Accord
Same Mind
A Song of Ascents. Of David. 1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
Infighting is a cancer to unity because it comes from Pride
Philippians Exposition
parable of the war between the wolves and the dogs: The wolves were somewhat afraid, for the dogs were many and strong, and therefore they sent out a spy to observe them. On his return, the scout said, “It is true the dogs are many, but there are not many mastiffs among them. There are dogs of so many sorts one can hardly count them. As for the most of them,” said he, “they are little dogs, which bark loudly but cannot bite. However, this did not cheer me so much,” said the wolf, “as this, that as they came marching on, I observed they were all snapping right and left at one another, and I could see clearly that though they all hate the wolf, yet each dog hates every other dog with all his heart.”
Conviction - Wolves
Preferences - Other Dogs
Conviction over Preference.
Way Number 2 - Humility in Community (vs. 3)
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit
Humility - Paul’s created word.
Count other better than yourself
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
34 Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.
One of God’s desires for His people is that they are marked by their humility which comes from a desire for His glory and not ours.
Serving in ministry with the right attitudes.
Mexico vs. US
Others over Self.
Way Number 3 - Selflessness in Conduct (vs. 4)
Not just your needs but others as well.
Peripheral Vision
God calls us to not just look at our stuff but be aware of others needs as well. Why? So we can act.
So you might be thinking at this point…That is impossible! I cannot do that.
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
Convictions over Preferences
Others over Self
Peripheral Perspective
If we have Jesus, we can do it. When we do it, God is pleased.
