Jude's Description of Self

vs. 1 -2

We must understand who we are in relation to God to fight for the faith.

We must be kept in Christ to maintain the Faith.

It is by His Great mercy that we are maintained.

Jude's Purpose For writing 3-4

he intended to write an exciting encouraging letter about their common salvation

Instead, he writes to them to contend for the faith

vs. 4 certain people are distorting the gospel for their own gain.

they are living lives that are contrary to Jesus Christ.

a. Jude 4 (FSB): The NT employs the Greek term, asebēs, to describe “ungodly” conduct (e.g., 2 Pet 2:5–6; 1 Tim 1:9). Jude uses the word here to describe the shameless deeds and illicit desires of the false teachers (Jude 15, 18). Jude goes on to describe the specific activities that exemplify their ungodly actions

b. “licentiousness” implies sexual sin that these false teachers were engaging in.

c. not only this, but their actions denied Christ as master over them.

Notice, Jude doesn't mention what Heresy they espouse with their words. rather their actions

Punishment For The False Teachers

vss.5-10

Jude Gives 2 sets of three examples of false teacher demise.

in these verses, he gives the example of…

a. the Israelites- unbelief that led to death

b. the angels- assuming authority that they didn't deserve or have.

c. Immoral behavior

3. Jude equates the action of the OT examples of these false teachers. each time their end was the just wrath of God.

The Way We Contend for The Faith.

vs 17-24

you must abide in the word and then you will be able to know what to look out for.

believers are called to focus on Christ and the faith that has been handed down.

Colossians 1:10 ,

contending for the faith is something that is done in the context of the Body as prescribed by God Ephesians 4:1-6
