Matthew 21:1-11
Map of Triumphal entry
I read a story about a plainly dressed man who went into a church in the Netherlands one Sunday and took a seat near the pulpit. Soon, a woman came along and curtly told the man that he was seated in her seat. She then asked him to leave the seat. The man apologized and apparently moved away to a pew reserved for the poor, from where he took part in the service.
When the service ended, a friend of the woman came over and asked her if she knew whom she had ordered out of her seat. The woman replied casually that she didn’t know who it was. To her great dismay, she was informed, “It was King Oscar of Sweden!” (Taken from a men’s devotional)
What a shame to meet the king and not know who he is!
The People on the street seeing the crowd asked the people around them, Who it this?
How sad it would be to attend church and hear about our King, and never really know him.
I would like to share a few characteristics today in way of introducing Him, if you don't know Him today.
If you do know our King, may this be an encouragement to serve Him better.
I. A Knowledgeable King v.2-3
I. A Knowledgeable King v.2-3
Job 21:22
22 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
We are told in this verse two things that Jesus knew about before they happened.
I think we take some encouragement from these two things!
A. He knows what the day will bring.
A. He knows what the day will bring.
In verses 2-3 He sends two disciples into Bethphage to get a donkey for Him to ride on.
He knew where to find the donkey,
that it would be tied up
He knew that he would need a donkey to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy
11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
B. He Knows Who the Day Will Bring
B. He Knows Who the Day Will Bring
that someone would try to stop them
and what they needed to say to be able to take the donkey.
Jesus knows who you will meet along the way today.
He also can lead you to say what you need to say to them.
Aren’t you glad that we serve a King who knows what we will face?
Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Not only is He a Knowledgeable King
II. An Honored King v.7-9
II. An Honored King v.7-9
I think we can notice some things from these verses.
A. They Honored Him by Obedience
A. They Honored Him by Obedience
True disciples of the King obey the King!
Are you obeying Jesus today?
Doing all that He has commanded us to do?
I tell my children Obedience is Doing what I say, When I say it, with the right heart attitude.
If I am missing any of these steps, I am disobedient.
Am i faithful to His house?
Hebrews 10:25
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Am I faithful to my walk with God?
John 8:12
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
“God’s mighty power comes when God’s people learn to walk with God.” Jack Hyles
Do you want God’s power today to help in your life
B. They Honored Him By Giving Him Priority
B. They Honored Him By Giving Him Priority
They prepared the donkey by laying their clothes on them.
Made him more comfortable.
I wonder if Jesus is comfortable in the seat of our heart?
The people who recognized him for who he was spread their clothes and palm branches in the way.
They praised Him, crying out Hosanna
Do we honor Jesus with our speech?
Does what we say honor our king?
Do you give Him priority in your life and in your day?
“As God is exalted to the right place in our lives, a thousand problems are solved all at once.” – A.W. Tozer
1 Corinthians 10:31
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
We see that He was a Knowledgeable King and an Honored King, but he truly was...
III. A Saving King
III. A Saving King
The people cried out “Hosanna, to the Song of David. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.”
Hosanna means save now, help now, or save we pray thee.
They cried out for salvation from the Roman oppression, but they didn’t even realize that He came to save them from a far greater oppression, the oppression of sin.
That is why just a little while later they were crying out for His Crucifixion.
But whatever the people cried, Jesus knew he came for one reason and one reason only.
Luke 19:10
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Think about that for a moment.
Jesus left heaven having never left the Father’s presence or the glory of heaven - to seek and to save that which was lost.
Jesus was born in a lowly manger - to seek and to save that which was lost.
Jesus Lived a sinless life - to seek and to save that which was lost.
Jesus collected and traveled with 12 disciples teaching them - to seek and to save that which was lost.
Jesus came down this Jerusalem road realizing he was coming to His death - to seek and to save that which was lost.
What a King!
IV. The High King
IV. The High King
We see in verse 9 the people cried out Hosanna in the highest!
Whether they knew it or not, the Holy Spirit gave them the right words!
There has never been a king like Jesus.
A. He is the King of Kings!
A. He is the King of Kings!
If you do not know this king, If you were to refuse that he is a Knowledgeable King, if you were to refuse to Honor this King, if you never accepted the fact that He is a Saving King.
One thing you will not be able to deny, is the fact that He is the High King!
The Bible tells us...
Philippians 2:10-11
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
One day every hater of Christianity will confess the truth.
One day every hater of Jesus Christ will confess Him Lord.
B. He is the Coming King!
B. He is the Coming King!
One day Jesus will come to this same Mount of Olives.
Zechariah 14:4
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
He is coming!
Just as sure as I am breathing today, Jesus is coming again!
Are you ready for that day?
Are you ready to call Him your king?
You cannot make Him your king, because He is already king!
Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost.
Are you willing to be found?
If you do know Jesus as your Savior today, Are you obedient to Him?
Are you praising Him?
“Well, I’m just not a praiser!”
Neither am I, but I still do it!
Why Because He is the King of Kings and he deserves it!
