Easter Service
Giving
Genesis 28:20–22 ESV
20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

INTRO

Palm Sunday 2021
It was in December of 1903, that after many attempts, the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were successful in getting their "flying machine" off the ground and into the air at Kitty Hawk. Thrilled over the accomplishment, they telegraphed this message to their sister Katherine: "We have actually flown 120 feet. Will be home for Christmas." Katherine hurried to the editor of the local newspaper and showed him the message. He glanced at it and said, "How nice. The boys will be home for Christmas." He totally missed the big news—for the first time in human history, man had flown!

Airplanes do not amaze us anymore they are so common place.

Preparation

Lk 19:28-36
28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
Everything ready beforehand
excommunication for Christ
John 9:22 ESV
22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.)
Donkeys = Royalty
1 Kings 1:33 ESV
33 And the king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
1 Kings 1:44 ESV
44 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king’s mule.
Christ = Sovereign over creation
Are we truly preparing the way for the LORD?

Celebration

Lk 19:37-40
37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Permitted public demonstration
Fulfilled Prophecy… literally
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Psalm 118:25–26 ESV
25 Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.

Judas would betray
John 7:30 ESV
30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Matthew 26:14–16 ESV
14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Stones or Flesh?
There is a celebration coming but only for those who are prepared…

Lamentation

Lk 19:41-44
41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Crowd Rejoices = Jesus Weeps
Second time Jesus weeps
Lazarus - Jhn 11.35
quiet over friend
loud over Jerusalem
Looking Back
wasted opportunities of visitation
Looking Around
spiritual ignorance / religiosity = pilgrams of pagan practices
Looking Forward
judgment on this nation / people who did not receive Him / 600k killed
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eighteen: Jerusalem at Last! (Luke 19)

Jonah looked on Nineveh and hoped it would be destroyed (Jonah 4), while Jesus looked at Jerusalem and wept because it had destroyed itself.

City of God / People of God
Jerusalem = city of peace… hidden from them
Prophetic prediction of destruction… 60-70 AD Rome
Grace or Destruction
At the time of celebration there will be lament for others…

Confrontation

Lk 19:45-48
45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

religions market !!
Ran by priests… double motives
Den of robbers
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eighteen: Jerusalem at Last! (Luke 19)

Instead of praying for the people, the priests were preying on the people!

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eighteen: Jerusalem at Last! (Luke 19)

Campbell Morgan reminds us that a “den of thieves” is a place where thieves run to hide after they have committed their wicked deeds. The religious leaders were using the services of the holy temple to cover up their sins

But before we condemn them too harshly, have we ever gone to church and participated in religious worship just to give people the impression that we were godly?
Jesus remained in the temple
Set his face like flint to the cross
Healed Lame and Blind… Waited for his time
Jesus is not fooled by foe religion…

Proclamation

Lk 19:38
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Psa 118:19-29
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! 28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. 29 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Jesus is King
Jesus is Messiah
Jesus is God
Do not focus so much on religion that you lose sight of Jesus !!
Do not let the story of good news become old news !!
Let this same Jesus have a triumphant entry into your hearts this day !!
Big Idea of the Message: Rather than seeing Jesus’ Triumphal Entry for what it was— a fulfillment of prophecy—many, including the religious leaders, were so concerned with keeping their own power and authority; their own comfort and glory, that they missed the Messiah.
Applicational Point: It’s possible to be close to religion, and yet still miss Jesus.
