Betrayed and Denied (Luke 22:47-53; 54-62)

NOTE: It was for our benefit!
A. A Kiss, A Strike of a sword, a healing and a Conspiracy of Darkness. (Luke 22:47-53)
1. Jesus Desire is that No One Perish
ILLUST: v.48 Matthew 20:13,22:12 Gives the idea of a companion, comrade, or mate. What was Jesus actually doing in His words?
NOTE: In Jesus words you see compassion, patience and a desire to call people to do what is right in the very act of doing wrong.
2. Jesus came to Heal not Destroy
NOTE: Peter strikes Malchus ear (John 18:10), Jesus says stop this, and He heals one of His arresting officers. What is Jesus doing in His actions? Healing not just an ear but the heart of Peter and others.
3. Our Fight is not against Flesh and blood. Ephesians 6
Jesus questions why they never arrested Him before and says “but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.” What is Jesus talking about?
B. Three chances and a look of compassion Luke 22:54-62
NOTE: Maybe this is why parents count to three?
1. Peter is recognized as a Jesus Followers and Denies knowing Jesus all three times. V.54-60
2. The Lord turned and looked at Peter.
NOTE: What a moment! A look of grace and compassion brings shame and guilt that drove Peter to go out and weep bitterly.
NOTE: Even in Betrayl and denial Jesus chose compassion to change the heart of man.

Arrested and Tried (Luke 22:63-25)

A. His Treatment V.63-65
B. Tried by the Council of Elders V.66-71
C. Tried by Pilate and Herod (Luke 23:1-25)
1. Ceasar asks Jesus “Are You the King of the Jews?”
NOTE: Here without saying it Jesus does agree that He is Messiah, the long awaited King of the Jews.
2. “I find no guilt in this man” v.4
3. Pilate sends Jesus to Herod. v.7
D. Jesus does not even answer Herod so He is mocked and abused by Herods soldiers and sent back to Pilate. v.8-12
E. Pilate wants to release Jesus But the elders want Him crucified. v.13-25
1. “. . . nothing deserving death . . . I will punish Him and release Him.” v.15b-16
2. The elders used a custom to release Barabas even though Pilate spoke with them again v.20 but they wanted Jesus Crucified and Pilate Pronounced the sentence and “their demand to be granted.” v.24-25
CLOSE: In this final scene Jesus took the penalty of Barabus who was guilty of murder and insurrection. Jesus didn’t just take Barabus’ place but all those who said crucify Him.
THIS IS THE LOOK OF SUFFERING THAT MADE A WAY FOR ALL TO HAVE LIFE.
