Go back and watch the previous 2 update videos
We’ve been looking at these 4 common models of atonement and seeing how they all fit together to create a beautiful picture of what actually happened when Jesus died on the cross
Christus Victor
“Christ the Victor”
What does it mean when we say Christ has defeated death? When we say Jesus conquered the enemy?
Christus Victor- Three Questions
Who is Jesus defeating?
Death is defeated, Jesus has given us victory, etc.
Satan, the devil, “the accuser”
Two extremes
Not real
When satan or demons are mentioned in the Bible, they are a metaphor or imagery to describe human evil, sin, etc.
Unhealthy fascination
Adopt extra-biblical teachings
Things that sound true, but don’t have any biblical backing
Things we read about in fiction, or conspiracy theories
Attribute too much to the devil
All powerful being that we can’t resist
“The devil made me do it”
As with most things, the truth lies in between these two extremes
Satan is a real being in the world
Genesis- The deceptive snake
Matthew- Jesus encounters Satan in the desert
Nature of the Devil
Chaotic, paradoxical, non-omniscient
The devil is not this unstoppable, being that can force humanity to bend to his will
That power belongs only to God
However, he does exist to tempt, to accuse, to distort truth
In the Gospels we see Satan at work to both keep Jesus off the cross AND try to put him on the cross
Demons know who Jesus is, but they don’t know his purpose
Joshua McNall quote
“Satan serves a purpose in the divine economy as one of the “all things” that work together (sometimes unwillingly) for the good of those who love God
Satan does not do things that God is unaware of
God uses even the devil to work things for His glory and His good purposes
How did Jesus triumph over the enemy?
Christus victor doesn’t really aim to answer the mechanics of this
Did Jesus descend and storm the gates of hell? Was there some sort of “deep magic” at work like in Narnia?
Christus victor aims to present Christ as the victor in his death
From the outside, it appears that Jesus does not win on the cross
Being stripped naked, beaten, hung on a cross, wearing a crown of thorns is not a picture of victory
But it is through this act that Jesus defeats death, and redeems his people
Why doesn’t it feel like Jesus is victorious now?
Hebrews 10:12-13
Christ’s victory on the cross is both finished and still to come, stages
Christ’s death rescued us from the consequences of sin in that one moment
But, we are also still waiting for Jesus to come back to earth and claim ultimate and final victory
In Christ, we experience that immediate triumph over death
We no longer are slaves to the sin that called us guilty
We have gained victory through Jesus’ death
That victory was costly and painful for Jesus to obtain
While we wait for the final victory to be won, we should expect pain and suffering in the midst of our triumph, because Jesus did
God’s loving patience has delayed his final victory
2 Peter 3:9
God is giving humanity time to put their faith and trust in him
What does this mean for you
Jesus has claimed victory over the powers of death and sin
You do not have to live in fear and anxiety over the consequences of your past
In Christ your debt has been paid, Jesus’ death brought a victory that cannot be taken away by your sin
Gives us confidence to proclaim Jesus to our world
The trajectory of our world is not to hell in a hand-basket, it is decisively toward Christ
Even though it may not always seem that way, it is the biblical truth that Jesus is coming to restore all of creation and claim the final victory over all things
