1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’ ” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
This is the day that we know as Palm Sunday when we remember the so-called triumphal entry of the Lord Jesus to Jerusalem.
Experiences as a child..
There are a lot of important things happening here that we do not want to miss.
1. Jesus fulfills Messianic Prophecy
“Riding a colt of a donkey”
Fulfillment of
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
He orchestrated the events of His entry to Jerusalem
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.
There is a significance in what Jesus did
they were traveling towards Jerusalem in the East side and He stopped at the Mount of Olives
The Mount of Olives is more like a hill about 2,700 ft high, it is nowhere close to the Rocky Mountains
Jesus standing there was so significant
Angels in Acts 1
The same prophet Zechariah prophesied of a day that the Messiah will stand on the Mount of Olives and that the Mount of Olives will be split from East to West forming a great valley.
This event has not taken place yet and is an event of the future.
Ezekiel prophesied about the glory of the Lord entering Jerusalem through the Eastern gate. Which is also a future event.
It appears that while Jesus is literally fulfilling the prophecy about Him entering Jerusalem riding a donkey. He is also enacting His future coming on the Mount of Olives and entrance to Jerusalem through the Eastern Gate.
Jesus fulfills prophecy on His first coming and foreshadows prophecy on the second.
So HE told his disciples to get a donkey. He said that they will find it tied in a certain village, He said bring it.
Notice that it has to be a donkey that no one has sat.
This denotes royalty, in ancient Israel, only the King rides the animals in the royal stable.
Hallelujah to the King.
So He said in verse 3:
3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’ ” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.
Amazing, everything happened the way Jesus said it. Secondly, the ones who saw them immediately understood.. No questions asked, “you can take something that rightfully belongs to the King”. (claiming our new place)
There’s this story of a Pastor who dreamed of driving a Porsche. An idea came to him after reading this story from the Bible, he found a Porsche on someone’s driveway with the keys inside.. he hopped on the car drove on the highway as fast as he can.. so there was a wild police chase and when he finally pulled over he told the cops “the Lord has need of it, I was going to return it.”
Second event we don’t want to miss...
2. Jesus inaugurated His journey to the cross.
Hosanna in the highest!”
So the people in Jerusalem gave Jesus a royal welcome. This is the equivalent of a red carpet welcome, they spread their cloaks on the road and took branches of palm trees..
Did they do this because they really understood that Jesus was the Messiah?
They were giving Jesus this welcome and shouting praises not because they understood Who Jesus was but rather they heard of what Jesus did..
17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
the crowds were doing this because they heard about Jesus raising Lazarus..
They have an agenda. They thought this is our chance, we crown Jesus King and He will drive their enemies out of their land.
Little did they know that Jesus came their for another reason, in fact it is a greater reason..
this is the week that inaugurated a chain of events leading to why Jesus came to the world in the first place.
you notice that Mark puts his focus from chapter 11 on the last week of Jesus on earth.. Mark has 16 chapters so that is almost half of the book.. and this shows how important Jesus’ last week was — that was His primary mission,, Jesus came to die.
He came to die for you and me...
Again, has control over prophetical events.. you would notice that He did something very different..
For three years wherever Jesus was ministering, whenever He did a miracle or whenever someone got it right about Who He really was, what was that thing he always asked a person he healed or delivered or his disciples to do?
He told them not to tell anyone.. because His time has not yet come..
When Jesus confessed Him as the Christ the Son of the living God in Matthew 16, Jesus told the disciples “do not tell anyone that He is the Messiah”.
Because once the word spreads that He is indeed the Messiah it will set off a chain of events..
The Jewish leaders will become insecure..
They will fear that the Romans will come and destroy the country because they have anointed someone king..
Selfish: It is losing their power that they feared and cared about..
So these Jewish leaders would act and kill Jesus.
But it appears now that Jesus did not mind being openly crowned king..
He knew that the time has come.
Third thing Jesus did...
3. Jesus came to be rejected so that we will be accepted.
The crowds cried out
“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!”
They are quoting Psalm 118, a Messianic Psalm..
But this same crowd shouting these praises would be the same crowd that just six days later would shout “crucify Him!”
Jesus’ Entry to Jerusalem was a Short-lived Coronation
what happened?
11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
After an eventful coming into Jerusalem, Jesus did not do anything spectacular.. Mark said He looked around, checked the time and He went back to Bethany with His disciples to rest..
The other Gospel accounts gave more details of what Jesus did after He entered Jerusalem.. nothing grand or kingly..
Luke said He cried for Jerusalem.. and lamented over its coming destruction..
Matthew said He immediately cleansed the temple and drove out the money changers.. a show of strength but still not their idea of someone who would unite the nation against the Romans..
You see Jesus did not fit their idea of a Messiah.. they expected a military uprising, they waited and waited and nothing happened.
Jesus was not King of their liking.
Question is this:
Did the disciples return the donkey?
Is Jesus Your King or King only to your Liking?
Are you like the Jews who expected a military king? Then turned away when Jesus did not fit their expectations?
when things don’t go your way.
when your idea of a Christian life does not fit the reality of the Christian life.. a pattern of self-denial, take up the cross.. follow Jesus..
Is your life a story of a temporary coronation?
I’ve seen it so many times.. people in tears,,, then don’t hear from them again..
If Jesus is not Lord of ALL HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL..
What is your idea of Jesus? He is Lord only until He demands something from you.
Some Christians are content with Jesus crucified on the cross.
