Chapter 46

Everyone is exiled. The chosen people of Judah and Israel has not listened and have been exiled to Babylon or fled to Egypt against God’s Commandment
Now we will see God’s response to the nations that rebelled.
Jeremiah 46:1–5 ESV
The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations. About Egypt. Concerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “Prepare buckler and shield, and advance for battle! Harness the horses; mount, O horsemen! Take your stations with your helmets, polish your spears, put on your armor! Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. Their warriors are beaten down and have fled in haste; they look not back— terror on every side! declares the Lord.
Previously Judah’s King Josiah fought the Egyptians here at Carchemish
Carchemish - Meaning “Fort of Chemosh” who it the god of the Moabites
Josiah died there when he fought afainst the Egyptians at this same location and Egypt controlled the land but now Babylon will defeat them.

Jeremiah 46:25 ESV
The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him.
Amon was the chief god of ancient Thebes.
Also Pharoah was considered a god.
Q: How does God feel about people worshipping other gods?
Exodus 20:3 ESV
“You shall have no other gods before me.
YHWH specifically states that he will destroy the false god of the other nations. He will demonstrate the He is the only true God.
Then God promises a restoration for Israel as he continually has.
Notice that its not dependent on Israel, God will fulfill His purpose and no one can stand against it, not even the people that He chose.
This is what some refer to as Perseverance of the Saints, that God will preserve those who are chosen by him.
John 10:27–29 ESV
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

Chapter 47

Jeremiah 47:1–4 ESV
The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down Gaza. “Thus says the Lord: Behold, waters are rising out of the north, and shall become an overflowing torrent; they shall overflow the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. Men shall cry out, and every inhabitant of the land shall wail. At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels, the fathers look not back to their children, so feeble are their hands, because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remains. For the Lord is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.
Q: You guys ever see those movies where there are giant tsunamis that are created.
The Day After Tomorrow
The Perfect Storm
The Impossible (2012) - The Boxing Day Tsunami
Notice what what the judgement is being compared to
Rushing water from the north
Imagine like in the movies a giant wave coming out of the sea about to destroy everything.
The water overpowers everything, and destroys all in its path.
The rushing of their chariots v 3
It will be so terrifying that fathers will abandon their children behind to escape the impending doom.
This will hit the Philistines, Tyre, Sidon and all the supporting nations

Chapter 48

This Chapter specifically talks about the judgement against Moab.
Strangely enough there are 47 verses in this chapter and there is more judgment being described here against Moab than there is against Egypt in all of Jeremiah.
The Moabite people are descendants from Lot, there have been times of peace between the Israelites and the Moabites and also times to war.
There are another 25 cities/locations called out in this Chapter that will also see judgment.
Lets see some of the places.
Jeremiah 48:21–24 ESV
“Judgment has come upon the tableland, upon Holon, and Jahzah, and Mephaath, and Dibon, and Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, and Kiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon, and Kerioth, and Bozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.
Q: What have you noticed about all of the nations from these times?
Why are almost none of them around?
The only nations that are still around have completely ditched their false gods, they are not more.
Israel is still around but much more like it was back then.
All of the middle eastern nations embrace one of the 3 Abrahamic Religions
Q: Why do you suppose that is? Does that mean anything?
Jeremiah 48:42 ESV
Moab shall be destroyed and be no longer a people, because he magnified himself against the Lord.
This event occured, Josephus , a 1st century Politician and historian who has provided a vast amount of extra biblical commentary that confirms scripture.

Chapter 49

v 1-6 The judgement on the Ammonites
Similarities between the Edomites and the Ammonites
The Ammonites again are traced back to Lot.
Defeated by David and his army. They both served the Assyrians, conquered by the Babylonians and planned to revolt against them. Stoped being a nation in the 6th century BC
Chapter 49 takes the same poetic message of destruction and judgement as 48 . Their false god will be destroyed and their priests and officials will be judged
v7-22 Judgement on the Edomites
The Edomites are descendants of Esau. Esau had contention with Jacob because Jacob stole his birthright, but Esau actually sold it for a bowl of soup.
Again same message as the other two. They are being judged because of their pride. They were located in a strategically good location and were blessed with many good fruits from the land.
Jeremiah 49:16 ESV
The horror you inspire has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, declares the Lord.
They were a city high on the mountains.
Q: Why would this cause them to be boastful?
They had strategic and military advantage over anyone who wanted to challenge them.
Jeremiah 49:19 ESV
Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?
God here is referring to himself as a Lion who will come up against them to devour them.
This will echo the same message in a later chapter.
And He states the He will appoint whomever He wants, from His own sovereign will.
Are we starting to see a pattern here? Lots of judgment and lots of commonality, they have all gone down the same path and are guilty of largely the same things.
Lets see some more
v23-27 Judgement on Damascus
28-33 Judgement on Kedar and Hazor
v34- 39 Judgement on Elam
They were all conquered by Babylon, with the exception of Elam, cannot say for sure that it was the Babylonians who conquered them, it could have been but some nation did though, they were just unnamed,

Chapter 50 and 51

So now God has judged all the nations and now we get to the big one. Judgement on Babylon, 110 verse dedicated to pronouncing their destruction.
Babylon was located in what is now Southern Iraq
Jeremiah 50:1–3 ESV
The word that the Lord spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet: “Declare among the nations and proclaim, set up a banner and proclaim, conceal it not, and say: ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.’ “For out of the north a nation has come up against her, which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; both man and beast shall flee away.
Q: What do we see?
Tha nations false god’s will be torn down , Bel, Merodach etc.
A nation from the north withh invade. In the same way they were invading from the north into Judah
Jeremiah 50:4–5 ESV
“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, weeping as they come, and they shall seek the Lord their God. They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’
This is a sign for the people to prepare to leave, God will return them back home after many years in exile.
Jeremiah 50:15 ESV
Raise a shout against her all around; she has surrendered; her bulwarks have fallen; her walls are thrown down. For this is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done.
Q: What do we see? The last part seems to say that what Babylon has done to others, thats what should happen to them?
How can this be when we clearly saw that Babylon was an instrument of God’s judgement?
Remember - In the NT Babylon is seen a the epitome of evil.
Revelation 14:8 ESV
Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.”
Revelation 16:9 ESV
They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
Revelation 17:5 ESV
And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.”
Revelation 18:2 ESV
And he called out with a mighty voice, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
This is a perfect example of God’s sovereign will. God has and does direct the forces of evil for His own good purposes. How that works, i cannot say 100%
Mans still have responsibility for his own actions.
Lets jump back into the text
Jeremiah 50:19–20 ESV
I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and in Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.
Q: What do we see?
What does iniquity mean? Sin
So God says he will look for sin within Israel and he will find none. How can this be possible, they are idolators, evildoers.
God forgave them and cast their sins away. Its not that they are perfect and holy, but He is not remembering their past anymore.
Psalm 2:1–12 ESV
Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Chapter 51
Jeremiah 51:20–23 ESV
“You are my hammer and weapon of war: with you I break nations in pieces; with you I destroy kingdoms; with you I break in pieces the horse and his rider; with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer; with you I break in pieces man and woman; with you I break in pieces the old man and the youth; with you I break in pieces the young man and the young woman; with you I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; with you I break in pieces the farmer and his team; with you I break in pieces governors and commanders.
Chapter 52 is a summation of everything that happened
Jeremiah 52:28–30 ESV
This is the number of the people whom Nebuchadnezzar carried away captive: in the seventh year, 3,023 Judeans; in the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem 832 persons; in the twenty-third year of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Judeans 745 persons; all the persons were 4,600.
These are the number of people that were exiled, this number most likely only included the men.
2 Kings 24:14–17 ESV
He carried away all Jerusalem and all the officials and all the mighty men of valor, 10,000 captives, and all the craftsmen and the smiths. None remained, except the poorest people of the land. And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon. The king’s mother, the king’s wives, his officials, and the chief men of the land he took into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. And the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon all the men of valor, 7,000, and the craftsmen and the metal workers, 1,000, all of them strong and fit for war. And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
Possible explanations - The three exiles listed here were not all encompassing
The number of men listed in Jeremiah may only count the men but 2 Kings specifically also states men.
Possibly in the number from 2 Kings are included people not just from Judah as the Jeremiah counts are very precise and the 2 Kings number are a rough estimate.
Note, not every single person was take out of Judah
