John 16:26–27 NASB95
26 “In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
- We have all heard the saying "any friend of yours is a friend of mine".
- How many times have you introduced yourself to someone and said that you are a mate of so & so’s?
- What a difference it makes to that relationship
- The one, who prior to your conversation, was just an acquaintance is now instantly a friend
- WHY? -> because you have a common friend
- How many people have ended up marrying someone who just happened to be one of your friends?
- Somehow its easier to strike up friendships when you have someone to go between [happened to be my sister who got Ros & I together]
-------------------------
- In our text, Christ fulfils that kind of role between us as sinners and God who is holy
- Jesus assured His disciples of this comforting truth when He told them He was soon to leave them
- Through His redemptive work on the cross, Jesus has removed the barrier that would have kept us from ever being accepted by the Father
- The Father loves us and will answer any prayer that is consistent with His name and character because we have loved Jesus & believed in Him
- Any friend then of Christ, is a friend of the Father
- Whilst the cross of Christ symbolised a terrible death, it has brought us together with our Father God
Matthew 26:26–29 NASB95
26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. 29 “But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
