Luke 19:28-44
Triumphal Entry
28 After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,
30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
31 “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ”
32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They said, “The Lord has need of it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.
36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.
37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,
38 shouting:
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”
41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
42 saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
43 “For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,
44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

“The traditional calendar for the events of our Lord’s last week of ministry looks like this:
Sunday—Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
Monday—Cleansing the temple
Tuesday—Controversies with the Jewish leaders
Wednesday—Apparently a day of rest
Thursday—Preparation for Passover
Friday—Trial and Crucifixion
Saturday—Jesus rests in the tomb
Sunday—Jesus raised from the dead
Keep in mind that the Jewish day went from sundown to sundown, so that our Thursday evening would be their Friday, the Day of Passover.”

the disciples - they had instructions and they obeyed without notoriety, and they are not mentioned by name.
the owners - those with resources would do well to offer them to the King. NOTICE - they were obviously ready and willing to use what they had for Jesus.
Think for a moment what you have that you can offer to the Lord?
It is TIME? Will you take the TIme to talk to someone? To LISTEN?
It is MONEY for Missions?
Can You PRAY? Will You Pray?
What can you offer to the Savior?

v. 35-38 - this is ROYAL treatment, they recognized at least something about Who Jesus Was - and they celebrated and worshipped.
This is the only time that Jesus permitted a public demonstration on His behalf, and He did so for at least two reasons.
First, He was fulfilling prophecy and presenting Himself as Israel’s king (Zech. 9:9). How much of this the crowd really understood we cannot tell, even though they responded by quoting their praises from a messianic psalm (Ps. 118:25–26). No doubt many of the Passover pilgrims thought that Jesus would now get rid of the Roman invaders and establish the glorious kingdom.
The second reason for this demonstration was to force the Jewish religious leaders to act.
They had hoped to arrest Him after the Passover (Matt. 26:3–5), but God had ordained that His Son be slain on Passover as the “Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29; and see 1 Cor. 5:7). Every previous attempt to arrest Jesus had failed because “His hour had not yet come
VERSE 38 is a quote from Psalm 118:25-26
REBUKE came from the Religious Leaders - probably out of jealousy and spite.
19:39–40 These verses illustrate v. 14.
The Pharisees’ attempt to squelch the joy of the occasion is rebuked, for if the disciples stopped expressing their praise, the very stones would cry out.
All creation was made to worship this King who is Lord of all. (ESVSB Notes)
PALM BRANCHES - SHOUT TO THE LORD!!
9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David;
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest!”
15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant
9 Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:
“Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;
Hosanna in the highest!”
13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”

Jesus wept over Jerusalem...
Irony of Jesus, The King walking her streets, riding through in PEACE. The King of Peace
He is Peace for our souls - Our Souls will not find rest, until the REST IN HIM.
He is Peace for the World - Yet those in Jerusalem in a matter of days would turn on him and Exchange the Hosanna in the Highest for CRUCIFY HIM!!
This is a sorrow brought on by the REJECTION BY HIS OWN PEOPLE - and God’s CHosen People. They didn’t recognize their own.
I wonder often if we would recognize the Savior walking in our midst.
Struggle of the Popular and the Godly is always about us.
19:41 he wept over it. See notes on 13:34 and John 11:35. Though the rejection of Jesus by many of the Jews was predicted in the OT (see note on John 12:37–40), Jesus still feels great sorrow over their rejection, surely reflecting the heart of God as he contemplates the Jewish people rejecting his prophets and his Son.
