Luke 19:1–10 NKJV
1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

1) Zacheus was the worst kind of Sinner in first Century Isreal.

why was he the worst kind of sinner in first century Isreal?

Because he oppressed the people of God for an occupying force for his own gain.

Luke 19:1–2 NKJV
1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
He worked for the Roman government.
He was good at it because he was a chief.
He had given up on his people.
He had given up on God.

How many of us gave up on our families and gave up on God in order to pursue our own interests?

Part of walking with Jesus is making our wrongs right.

Making our wrongs right has nothing to do with earning my salvation, it shows the power of God moving in our lives. It’s our story, for His glory.

2) Zacheus was desperate for a change. He was willing to do whatever it took to see Jesus.

Luke 19:3–4 NKJV
3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.
did he have a complex about height? did he get ridiculed for his stature? Is that why he turned away from his God and his won people?
it doesn't mater how we got where we are, what matters is are we willing to let the hand we where dealt keep us victimized?
several years ago the Lord showed me that I can’t be a victorious and a victim at the same time. I was going to have to choose.
Many times we want to stay victims because it has become our Identity.

what are some identities that you walked in when you where in the world?

what are you trying to hold onto from the world? Why?

Sometimes the people who are out to hurt us end up being a blessing.

Luke 19:7 NKJV
7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

How where they a blessing?

they gave Zacheus a chance to make it right.

Romans 2:4–7 NKJV
4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;

3) Zacheus took responsibility for the life he lived before.

Luke 19:8 NKJV
8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”
Zacheus was making restitution according to the Law.
Exodus 22:1–2 NKJV
1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and slaughters it or sells it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep. 2 If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed.
2 Samuel 12:6 NKJV
6 And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”
when we are talking about amends there are things that we will never be able to pay back. if you where to burn a house down, or steel a wife or husband. you could not restore a marriage or rebuild a house. one should make necessary apologies for the things he cannot replace. in the case of a house or car one should give money to show the fruit of repentance until the dept is forgiven.
