*INTRO:  *Good evening I hope you enjoy the first hour of study with Bro.

Carroll.

He covered Romans 1 and 2, and we are going to try to cover Romans 3 and 4. 

 

Back in the fall of 1982, I was worried about my GPA at OBU.

I had just finished my first semester at OBU, and wanted to pledge a social club, but the signs didn’t look good.

I might not have a 2.0.

I had decent grades in every subject but one it was math.

Based on my calculations I had an F. 

 

When the grades came in the mail, I had finished my first semester with a 2.5 not a 3.0 but pretty good for goofing off---wouldn’t say?

J  I was glad that I had a decent GPA, but couldn’t figure out how I got a C in math---A “D” would have been a great, but a “C!”  How?

I went back to OBU for my spring semester and one of the first people I saw was my math teacher.

I asked him how I got a C.  (now I ain’t to bright am I?).

I had it figured for an “F”.

His words to me were Jeff don’t ask questions be thankful.

Which means hey stupid, I helped you tell me thankful and move on….:)

Grace…..

 

God’s provision for man’s need is alittle bit like that wouldn’t you say.

I mean if we are honest (which most of the time we are not) we know we deserve the “F.”

But God out of his mercy and without any good works from us---decides that He will make provision for our needs, our sins.

That provision is Jesus Christ.

Now in chapters 3 and 4 of Romans, Paul’s focus is on justification.

Chapter 3 he gives us a proposition, and chapter 4 is sorta of an illustration.

THE PROPOSITION.*

-A.

Romans 1:18-3:20 is Paul’s hammering away at our sinfulness.

This is our need.

-1.

They say for people who are addicted to things they must reach rock bottom.

-2.

They have to see their need.

-3.

Friends, we are addicted to sin.

We are slaves to sin.

We can’t help but sin.

This is not excuse our sin, but shows us that unless God does a work we can do no heavenly work.

-B.

But beginning in Romans 3:21---Paul begins to change the focus from man’s sin to God’s plan.

-1.

He will answer for us the 64K dollar question.

How can a man be made right with God?

 

-2.

This is the question that has been asked in every age.

How can a man be made right with God?

 

-a.

In searching to answer that man---man has always gotten the wrong answer.

-b.

God has given us the answer, but we don’t like his answer.

-c.

Humanity doesn’t want to except the gracious provision of God.

 

-3.

We have invented the religion of works.

We think to highly of ourselves.

Paul has shown that all have sinned.

None, no not one can earn their way into the Kingdom of God.

Sorta like me going to find a 1 million dollar home.

The banker would tell me Son you don’t have that kind of money.

We are like toddlers sometimes who have no concept of money and the price of things.

So, Paul has shown this and now gives us the provision of God.

The proposition is that we are justified by faith in the righteousness works of Jesus Christ.

Don’t do anything, but believe everything about Jesus.

Romans 3:21-26--- /21/But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, /22/even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.

For there is no difference; /23/for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, /24/being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, /25/whom God set forth /as/ a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, /26/to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.(NKJV)

Let’s review some things.

The purpose of the law was not to justified us, but to shown us how bad we are, and how good God is

 

-c.

The law cannot save because it was not given to save us, but to condemn us.

-d.

Paul shows us now that God righteousness has been reveal apart from the law….

-1)  The OT was a witness of God’s righteousness.

Look at verse 24…..

 

-D.

These verses point us to the wisdom of God’s plan.

We are made right with God not by our works, but His work and our faith in that work.

Justified means that you are declared righteous in God’s sight thru the merits of Christ, secure in our position in Christ before the throne of God.

Justification is God’s righteousness imputed, put to our account.

-2.

Sanctification is righteousness imparted or lived out in our daily lives.

-3.

Redemption---is deliverance from sin and its penalties by the payment of a price.

This price was Christ’s blood on the cross.

Propitiation---Christ’s sacrifice satisfied God’s holy law, thus making it possible for God to forgive sinners and remain just Himself.

God’s justice has been satisfied;  He may now look with kindness and grace upon a lost world.

Look at verse 25….it teaches us that in the ages before God’s full revelation of the Gospel of Christ, God appeared unjust in passing over the sins of humanity by forgiving such men as Noah, Abraham, and Enoch.

Now God did punish sin…..but we also see that God in his forbearance  had passed over sins….How was that?

In human terms,  He knew at the Cross that he would forgive.

Romans 3:27-31--- /27/Where /is/ boasting then?

It is excluded.

By what law?

Of works?

No, but by the law of faith.

/28/Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

/29/Or /is He/ the God of the Jews only?

/Is He/ not also the God of the Gentiles?

Yes, of the Gentiles also, /30/since /there is/ one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

/31/Do we then make void the law through faith?

Certainly not!

On the contrary, we establish the law.(NKJV)
