It was estimated that 1.2 million animals were sacrificed on every day of atonement in Israel.
In addition to that...
Any time an Israelite had to approach God for need or forgiveness in addition to this day - a sacrifice was brought to atone for their sin...
One was not allowed to approach God without having offered the appropriate offering — there were sin offerings, peace offerings, grain offerings, etc.
That sacrifice was to cover over the sins of man from being seen by God -
Think of it like this white board… write down sins - lies, lustful thoughts, accidentally touching something unclean, not keeping your Word to someone, etc.
Something innocent had to give its life for the guilt of another
22 In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
This is why so many cultures, even non Judeo-Christian had blood sacrifice - it is known in the depth of the souls of man, something must pay the price for the wrongs we have done.
Sin is a stain upon our lives that is unable to be released
Our failures and transgression of God’s moral laws are impossible to pay the price for, for even the blood of animals and innocent only covered over...
(explain the ark of the covenant with Tablets of law and on top the mercy seat -there the blood was applied to cover sin…)
Man has been left with guilt and condemnation for everything from a white lie to murder.
1 “If you are called to testify about something you have seen or that you know about, it is sinful to refuse to testify, and you will be punished for your sin.
2 “Or suppose you unknowingly touch something that is ceremonially unclean, such as the carcass of an unclean animal. When you realize what you have done, you must admit your defilement and your guilt. This is true whether it is a wild animal, a domestic animal, or an animal that scurries along the ground.
3 “Or suppose you unknowingly touch something that makes a person unclean. When you realize what you have done, you must admit your guilt.
4 “Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt.
5 “When you become aware of your guilt in any of these ways, you must confess your sin.
6 Then you must bring to the Lord as the penalty for your sin a female from the flock, either a sheep or a goat. This is a sin offering with which the priest will purify you from your sin, making you right with the Lord.
17 “Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin.
18 For a guilt offering, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value. Through this process the priest will purify you from your unintentional sin, making you right with the Lord, and you will be forgiven.
19 This is a guilt offering, for you have been guilty of an offense against the Lord.”
If you wanted to approach God, you had to bring a sacrifice…
SIN HAD DOMINION OVER MAN
SO MUCH SO THAT MAN GAVE UP trying to live by the law, only being defeated by our imperfection...
But then Jesus!
11 So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world.
12 With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.
13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity.
14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
15 That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.
16 Now when someone leaves a will, it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead.
17 The will goes into effect only after the person’s death. While the person who made it is still alive, the will cannot be put into effect.
18 That is why even the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal.
19 For after Moses had read each of God’s commandments to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, and sprinkled both the book of God’s law and all the people, using hyssop branches and scarlet wool.
20 Then he said, “This blood confirms the covenant God has made with you.”
21 And in the same way, he sprinkled blood on the Tabernacle and on everything used for worship.
22 In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
Blood of animals covered over so God would not see sin
BUT Jesus erased sin!
His PERFECT BLOOD PAID THE PRICE for the SINS OF MAN OF ALL TIME
- not just every sin committed before Sin sacrifice but after as well
25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past,
THIS MAKES HIM THE CHAMPION OVER SIN!!!
18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
9 And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
Back to the white board, this sin is no longer just covered (erase it) it is washed away for ever!
When we apply the blood of Jesus to our lives by believing and confessing our sin… He removes it
9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
Have you allowed the BLOOD OF THE CHAMPION to be applied to your life?
