The Fifth Word

Introduction

About Crucifixion, the Roman statesmen and writer Cicero said that it is, “the cruelest and most hideous punishment possible” (In Verrem 5.54.165)

The loss of tissue fluids had reached a critical level; the compressed heart was struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood to the tissues, and the tortured lungs were making a frantic effort to inhale small gulps of air.  The markedly dehydrated tissues sent their flood of stimuli to the brain. (Dr. Truman Davis, M.D., A Physician Analyzes the Crucifixion, http://www.thecross-photo.com/Dr_C._Truman_Davis_Analyzes_the_Crucifixion.htm)

John 19:28–29 ESV
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

Sour wine, or wine vinegar mixed with water, was often used by the Roman soldiers to quench their thirst.

Jesus is citing Scripture from the Psalms concerning His suffering on the cross.

Psalm 69:21 ESV
21 They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Psalm 22:15 ESV
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.

He had told his disciples this would happen.

Mark 8:31 ESV
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mark 10:33 ESV
33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles.
Matthew 26:2 ESV
2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
Mark 9:12 ESV
12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

The Sixth Word

John 19:30 ESV
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
What is it? What was finished?
Was it the suffering? Was it the pain? Was it the agony? What is it that Jesus finished?
Jesus was on a mission for God. He fulfilled the Scriptures spoken of His coming to suffering and die for sin.
Acts 13:27–29 ESV
27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. 28 And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
John 17:3–4 ESV
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
Hebrews 2:14–15 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Jesus was made a sin offering to appease God’s wrath against sinners. He died for our sins!

Matthew 20:28 ESV
28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
John 10:15–18 ESV
15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
Isaiah 53:10–12 ESV
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. 11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Romans 4:25 ESV
25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
1 John 2:2 ESV
2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
