Text - Luke 24.1-8
Luke 24:1–8 NKJV
1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ” 8 And they remembered His words.
Title - The Significance of Christ’s Resurrection

Background

the concept of resurrection was an issue among the Jews
Pharisees and Saduccees argued over it
Christians are divided as well in their view of resurrection
some no longer believe in an actual resurrection
some hold on to a general resurrection
Jesus spoke of His resurrection many times
Luke 9:21–22 NKJV
21 And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”
He used Jonah as a sign
Luke 11:29–32 NKJV
29 And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
He used the temple as a sign
John 2:18–22 NKJV
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
Jesus claimed to be THE RESURRECTION
Luke 11:25–26 NKJV
25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

The Main Point

The meaning and significance of Christ’ resurrection depends on who you are -
are you a believer?
are you a make-believer?
are you a non-believer?
1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
to the perishing - it is foolisness
to those being saved - it is the power of God

Its Significance to Old Testament Believers

Paul described resurrection as the hope of the dead.
before the Sanhedrin
Acts 23:6 NKJV
6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
before Governor Felix
Acts 24:15 NKJV
15 I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.
Many Jews, like the Pharisees, still believed in resurrection
Job confessed it - Job 19.25-27
King David sang about it - Psalm 16.9-11
Psalm 16:9–11 NKJV
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
God spoke of it - Deut 32.19
Deuteronomy 32:39 NKJV
39 ‘Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
Faith in these words resulted in the HOPE of the dead.
Martha expressed it
John 11:23–24 NKJV
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
But Jesus fulfilled IT
John 11:25–26 NKJV
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
1 Corinthians 15:20 NKJV
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Christ’s resurrection became the CORE MESSAGE of the gospel
1 Corinthians 15:12–16 NKJV
12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen.
no resurrection - no risen Christ
no risen Christ - no gospel message
no risen Christ - believers believed in vain - from OT to NT
1 Corinthians 15:17–20 NKJV
17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. 20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
WHAT’S THE POINT?
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION IS “HOPE FULFILLED” FOR THE O.T. SAINTS!

Its Significance to New Testament Believers

Christ resurrection is the core message of the gospel. It sums up everything that God has promised and to do to those who will believe in Christ.
It makes possible the believer’s justification
Romans 4:23–25 NKJV
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
Romans 5:1 NKJV
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
faith in the resurrected Christ
Death has been conquered!
Romans 6:8–10 NKJV
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
unlike the O.T. saints who went to sheol when they died, NT saints goes WHERE JESUS IS!
Victorious living on earth
Romans 8:11 NKJV
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
resurrection makes possible the coming of the promised Holy Spirit
A glorious inheritance awaits the saints
1 Peter 1:3–5 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
living hope - not ‘the hope of the dead’
WHAT’S THE POINT?
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION IS THE LIVING HOPE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT SAINTS!

Its Significance to Make-Believers

Luke 13:23–27 NKJV
23 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ 26 then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’
Christ’s resurrection will be a closing of the door of salvation
the Master is RISEN UP
the door is SHUT
Christ’s resurrection will be great disappointment
the make-believers will be REJECTED
WHAT’S THE POINT?
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION MARKED THE CLOSING OF THE OPPORTUNITY FOR JEWS UNDER THE LAW.
Resurrection of the gentile saints marks the closing of grace age!
Romans 11:25–28 NKJV
25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” 28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.

Its Significance to Unbelievers

Daniel’s Book spoke of 2 types of resurrection beyond the tribulation period
Daniel 12:1–3 NKJV
1 “At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.
time of troulbe - the great tribulation
Israelites will be “saved”
sleep…awake = resurrection
some to everlasting life
some to everlasting contempt (shame)
Jesus affirmed there 2 types of resurrection
John 5:28–29 NKJV
28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
resurrection of life
His resurrection
resurrection of gentile believers
resurrection of tribulation saints
resurrection of condemnation
the angel (in Daniel 12) was referring to
the resurrection of the tribulation saints
the resurrection of the dead on the day of judgment
Revelation 20:4–6 NKJV
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
those who did not worshp the beast (in the tribulation period)
rest of the dead - those died during the tribulation period
first resurrection - as John saw them in his visions
All the dead that remained in the grave up to that time, will be RAISED UP to face judgment
Revelation 20:11–15 NKJV
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
WHAT’S THE POINT?
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION MEANS THE DEAD SINNERS WILL NOT AND CANNOT ESCAPE JUDGMENT!

Conclusion

Christ’s resurrection is the most important event that ever happened in the history of humanity!
It resolved the problem of the past
It secures the future position of the believers
It will insure that no sinner, no evil, no wickedness, will get to enjoy eternity!
JESUS IS LORD OF ALL
Acts 10:36 NKJV
36 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—
Romans 14:7–9 NKJV
7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
we are THE LORD’S - whether we live or die!
