Matthew 28
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at
2
the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an
angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going
3
to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His
appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were
4
white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that
they shook and became like dead men.
Matthew 28
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I
know that you are looking for Jesus, who was
6
crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he
7
said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go
quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the
dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you
will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

Matthew 28
So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet
9
filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly
Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to
10
him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus
said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my
brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Matthew 28
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at
the tomb.
Luke 8
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to
another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of
2
God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who
had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called
Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come
3
out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of
Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These
women were helping to support them out of their own means.
Matthew 28
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I
know that you are looking for Jesus, who was
6
crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he
said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Matthew 16
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his
disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many
things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and
the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and
on the third day be raised to life.

Bystanders
Matthew 28
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at
the tomb.
Matthew 27
When the centurion and those with him who were
guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had
happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was
the Son of God!”
54
Many women were there, watching from a distance. They
had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his
56
needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the
mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s
sons.
55
Matthew 27
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen
60
cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut
out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance
61
to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the
other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
59
Why Mary and not the Disciples?
• She was less likely to be arrested
• She was more brave
• Highlights the preeminent role of women in
God’s ministry
Matthew 28
Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and
tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see
me.”
10
Matthew 28
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to
19
me. Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
20
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely
I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
