1 Cor 15:3-8 / The Resurrection of Christ

1 Corinthians 15:3–8 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
“I delivered … What I also recieved”
In it’s most simplest terms
Paul underscores the role of a bible teacher.
Discover hidden Jewels:
College: Hermeneutics course (illustration)
Imagine your job is to farm for hidden jewels.
You set out (strategically) and dig around looking for jewels.
You have nothing to do with where they are or how they got there. You job is simply to find them.
That is what bible interpretation is.
Paul goes on to show us that (from there) the he (the teacher of God’s word) is simply saying “look what I found.”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
“…as of first importance.”
Sign of spiritual maturity to recognise and be comfortable with SECONDARY issues. (not unimportant nut secondary)
Do you sing during worship
Mode of baptism
Pre-trib / Post- trib
Speaking in tongues or not
It doesn’t mean these are not important.
But you can disagree and still rightfully call yourself a Christian
Today we are NOT talking about a secondary issue.
It is of FIRST IMPORTANCE
It is non-negotiable
It is at the core of what it means to be a Christian.

Can we believe this?

1 Corinthians 15:5 ESV
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
“He (Jesus) appeared to Cephas, then the twelve...”
These were the closest people to Jesus.
They were in best position to notice a “scam”
They deserted Jesus
Then they devoted their lives to preaching His resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:6 ESV
6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
The He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive...
I appreciate this point because
Mass Hallucination Theory - they don’t work that way.
Paul is also saying, “Look there are witnesses…a lot of them.”
This is not just some antiquated myth.
Conversion of Doubters
1 Corinthians 15:7 ESV
7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
Then He appeared to James (his 1/2 brother)
John 7:3-5 “ So his brothers said to him, ‘Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.’ For not even his brothers believed in him.”
James was significant. What cause him to suddenly change his mind and believe that Jesus is in-fact the Christ, the son of God.
1 Corinthians 15:8 ESV
8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
Last of all, as one untimely born, He appeared to me (Paul).
Final witness that Paul listed was his won conversion.
“Last of all...” there is a reason why Paul put is this way...
Because of his life a Saul.
lets read what he said next
1 Corinthians 15:9 ESV
9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
What converted Paul?
According to him!
an encounter with the resurrected Jesus Christ.
We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, and only by faith. But it isn’t blind faith. Jesus left us with evidence and testimony to His victory of sin and death on our behalf.
But that is also an amazing point to all of this!!!
Jesus paid the price for sin on the cross.
Jesus defeated death by coming out of the tomb.
Why did He go out of His way to reveal Himself?
Because He desires a relationship with you and me.
He desires to be known by all who will receive Him!
If you have not put your faith in Jesus, receive Him today!!!!
Everything has been done, except your decision to follow Him!
