Good Friday
Jesus willingly died on the cross to pay for our sins as a substitute for us.
Faith in him results in Salvation
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9–10, ESV)
Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
The grave could not hold him.
The resurrection of Jesus is central to Christianity.
It is a central doctrine of our faith.
It is a central event in our Scriptures.
It is the culmination of God’s plan of redemption.
It is central to our Gospel.
Jesus Christ’s resurrection was a demonstration of God’s power. (Eph 1:19-20)
Jesus Christ’s resurrection was a demonstration of God’s power. (Eph 1:19-20)
The power of God the Father (Eph 1:19-20)
The power of God the Father (Eph 1:19-20)
Context of Eph 1
Paul just finished writing about the Spiritual blessings we have in Christ (1:3-14)
Paul is now praying for the church to understand God and what he accomplished in Christ. (1:15-23)
Understand God (Knowledge of Him)
Understand God’s Promise
Understand the Power of God.
Understand Christ (In Heaven and on Earth)
and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
“and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,” (Ephesians 1:19–20, ESV)
Power of God demonstrated in the resurrection
“immeasurable greatness” - “to attain a degree that extraordinarily exceeds a point on a scale of extent, go beyond, surpass, outdo” (BDAG) “quality of exceeding a standard of excellence, greatness” (BDAG)
“God’s Power” - “potential for functioning in some way, power, might, strength, force, capability" (BDAG)
Paul is praying for understanding in the church of God’s Power at work in the church.
This incredibly Great power to Save us from our sins.
To empower us for Holy living.
To empower us for active service.
Paul points to Jesus’ resurrection as the example of God’s power.
God’s power are shown in Jesus resurrection and exaltation.
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11, ESV)
That same power that God shows in the resurrection is the same power in the life of the believer.
Same power in our lives. (Col 2:12)
In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

I heard a pastor preaching on this text one time explaining judgment for the believer. When we stand before God our Judge and he opens the book of our lives, we will notice many pages ripped out and sections missing. If we were to ask where those pages are, the answer would come back those are the pages that contained our debts and judgments for our sins. they are nailed to the cross of Christ stamped “Paid if Full”
The resurrection confirmed Jesus Christ as the Son of God (Rom 1:1-6)
The resurrection confirmed Jesus Christ as the Son of God (Rom 1:1-6)
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,” (Romans 1:1–6, ESV)
Gospel is:
Promise of salvation through the Prophets and Scripture.
Concerning His Son.
Jesus
In the flesh
Is a decedent of David.
Paul is pointing to Jesus lineage to David to show that the promise God made with David of establishing an eternal Kingdom through his line is fulfilled in Jesus.
In the Spirit
“declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead,”
Declared
“to assign someone to a particular task, function, or role—‘to appoint, to designate, to assign, to give a task to.’” (Louw, Nida)
“ὁρίζομαι horizomai appoint; determine; designate (1x) - to be specified v. — to be or become clearly characterized, defined, or delimited as.” (Biblical Sense)
To Be (not become) the Son of God in power.
So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus raising from the dead shows that He is (not become) the Son of God as proclaimed.
According to the Spirit of Holiness (Cap, Holy Spirit)
By His resurrection from the dead.
Paul is explaining that we see in Jesus the Descendant of David Promised and The declaration that He is the Son of God through the resurrection.
One main reason we can have confidence in Jesus and His word (Just like the Apostles) is because of the resurrection.
If Jesus did not raise from the dead, we can go home.
The centrality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The centrality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As the basis of faith (1 Co 15:14–15)
As the basis of faith (1 Co 15:14–15)
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

Faith is trusting in Jesus as Savior and Lord.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17, ESV)
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

As the basis of believers’ justification (Rom 4:25; Rom 8:34)
As the basis of believers’ justification (Rom 4:25; Rom 8:34)
No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
“No unbelief made him (Abraham) waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” (Romans 4:20–25, ESV)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

My pages of debt from sin is gone (Nailed to the cross) and Jesus is my Justification and he intercedes for me..
As the basis of Christian hope (1 Peter 1:3-5)
As the basis of Christian hope (1 Peter 1:3-5)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

We have hope in our salvation and resurrection because we continue to remember God’s faithfulness to Christ.
As the basis of believers’ resurrection (1 Cor 15:20-23; John 14:18-20)
As the basis of believers’ resurrection (1 Cor 15:20-23; John 14:18-20)
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

First fruits
“1 Co 15:20–23 The Law of Moses (Ex 23:16) provided for an offering of the firstfruits of crops to God. The firstfruits were the guarantee of the full harvest to come. The NT sees the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the firstfruits of the full ingathering of all God’s people when Jesus Christ comes again.”
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

Takeaway
Takeaway
Jesus Christ’s resurrection represents a demonstration of the power of God, the confirmation of the divinity of Jesus Christ and the grounds of hope for Christian believers.
