Substitution…
Ancient seamen believed there was a Magnetic Mountain that would pull the nails from their vessels and destroy them. There is a Magnetic Mountain—Calvary.
In Canada there is a Magnetic Hill. Your car seems to coast uphill, but it is only an illusion. Calvary is no illusion!
NAC sprinkling, REd Sea or Leviticus blood … changed the perspective of the many nations!
MHC v.10-11 II. The grace and glories of his state of exaltation; and the graces he confers on us are not the least of the glories conferred on him. These are secured to him by the covenant of redemption, which these verses give us some idea of. He promises to make his soul an offering for sin, consents that the Father shall deliver him up, and undertakes to bear the sin of many, in consideration of which the Father promises to glorify him, not only with the glory he had, as God, before the world was (Jn. 17:5), but with the glories of the Mediator.
1. He shall have the glory of an everlasting Father. Under this title he was brought into the world (ch. 9:6), and he shall not fail to answer the title when he goes out of the world. This was the promise made to Abraham (who herein was a type of Christ), that he should be the father of many nations and so be the heir of the world, Rom. 4:13, 17. As he was the root of the Jewish church, and the covenant was made with him and his seed, so is Christ of the universal church and with him and his spiritual seed is the covenant of grace made, which is grounded upon and grafted in the covenant of redemption, which here we have some of the glorious promises of. It is promised,
(1.) That the Redeemer shall have a seed to serve him and to bear up his name, Ps. 22:30. True believers are the seed of Christ; the Father gave them to him to be so, Jn. 17:6. He died to purchase and purify them to himself, fell to the ground as a corn of wheat, that he might bring forth much fruit, Jn. 12:24. The word, that incorruptible seed, of which they are born again, is his word; the Spirit, the great author of their regeneration, is his Spirit; and it is his image that is impressed upon them.
(2.) That he shall live to see his seed. Christ’s children have a living Father, and because he lives they shall live also, for he is their life. Though he died, he rose again, and left not his children orphans, but took effectual care to secure to them the spirit, the blessing, and the inheritance of sons. He shall see a great increase of them; the word is plural, He shall see his seeds, multitudes of them, so many that they cannot be numbered.
(3.) That he shall himself continue to take care of the affairs of this numerous family: He shall prolong his days. Many, when they see their seed, their seed’s seed, wish to depart in peace; but Christ will not commit the care of his family to any other, no, he shall himself live long, and of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, for he ever lives. Some refer it to believers: He shall see a seed that shall prolong its days, agreeing with Ps. 89:29, 36, His seed shall endure for ever. While the world stands Christ will have a church in it, which he himself will be the life of.
Our redemption is not in our hands, but of resurrected Jesus = The work of man’s redemption is in the hands of the Lord Jesus, and it is in good hands. It is well for us that it is in his, for our own hands are not sufficient for us, but he is able to save to the uttermost. It is in his hands who upholds all things
Like King Cyrus with Jersualem, X with all us exiles = Cyrus, a type of Christ, shall perform all God’s pleasure (ch. 44:28), and therefore, no doubt, Christ shall. Christ was so perfectly well qualified for his undertaking, and prosecuted it with so much vigour, and it was from first to last so well devised, that it could not fail to prosper, to the honour of his Father and the salvation of all his seed.
I DID ALL THIS .. and no result NO! He will reckon all his pains well bestowed, and himself abundantly recompensed, if the many sons be by him brought through grace to glory. Let him have this, and he has enough. God will be glorified, penitent believers will be justified, and then Christ will be satisfied. Thus, in conformity to Christ, it should be a satisfaction to us if we can do any thing to serve the interests of God’s kingdom in the world
BY KNOWLEDGE JUSTIFY MANY = 2.) Christ, who purchased our justification for us, applies it to us, by his intercession made for us, his gospel preached to us, and his Spirit witnessing in us. The Son of man had power even on earth to forgive sin.
FAITH IS KNOWING CHRIST 2.) Christ, who purchased our justification for us, applies it to us, by his intercession made for us, his gospel preached to us, and his Spirit witnessing in us. The Son of man had power even on earth to forgive sin.
v.12 Incontestable victory and dominion …
BUT REWARD… more blessed to give than receive… spoil … he divides and distributes among his followers…
musar, punishment .. can be discipline, or punish to correct, wounds sometimes bruises and inuuries during a battle, - God’s smiting serious… Servant killed…
because of our REBELLION and our INQUITIES - He suffered consequences of our sinful acts… PENAL, SUBSTITUTIONARY ATONEMENT
THEN BENEFITS FOR US - brought peace in relationship; HEALING = physical and spiritual restoration of a nation… escho phyiscal and spiritual…
v7-9 Thrid Section of Poem - consequences to LAMB
= These verses emphasize three points: (a) like a lamb the Servant was submissive to death without complaint; (b) the Servant was unjustly cut off because of other people’s sins; and (c) the Servant died and was buried even though he was innocent.
53:8 Need Lord’s illumination to really GET CROSS = C. Seitz concludes that the “important point is that the death of the servant required illumination from God” if people were going to truly understand what it was all about. Although it appears that those who opposed and imprisoned the Servant had thought through their actions and knew exactly what they wanted to do to the Servant, the other people who observed these happenings did not seem to fathom the substitutionary role the Servant fulfilled by taking on himself the sins of many.
= Discern Body of Christ
But why did he die? answer related to his sufferings… connected to sins of others… odd striken for the transgression of MY people = in Isaiah always God sayihng my people, vs. Our People
v.9 Notification of his burial… NATAN gave, assigned grave…
Vv.10-11 FINAL EXALTATION OF THE SERVANT
GOD’S PERSPECTIVE OF THE SERVANT = behind the scenes it was God who caused the iniquities of us all to fall on him. Exalt him because he was willing to bear the sins of many… justifying many will bring honour to Christ… The structure of the final section is:
God’s plan: taking guilt will bring success 53:10
God’s Righteous One will justify many 53:11
God will exalt him who died for others 53:12
v.10 b Servant as a “guilt offering” (ʾāšām), possibly picking up images of the lamb led to the slaughter in 53:7. The verbal meanings of this word relate “being guilty of something” or “suffering the consequence of guilt.” These meanings influenced the semantic range of the noun that means “guilt” (Gen 26:10) = compensation; RESTITUTION = Servant gave up his life, he functioned as a compensation or restitution (similar to the reparation or guilt offering in Lev 5:14–6:7) to God for the damages done against him by those who sinned against him. The rebellious deeds and iniquities of others (53:5a, 6b, 8b) led to the crushing of the Servant to pay the restitution for the guilt incurred by these sins.
JESUS IS MY RESTITUTION… 10c In earlier chapters the Servant’s role was to bring back the sons of Jacob to God and to be a light to the Gentiles (49:5–6).
PROLONG HIS DAYS = blessings of God after He has died… Isaiah 26:19
Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.
Point here though isn’t the how of the resurrection but the postive consequences of His death being acheived = but some dramatic change must have happened after the death of the Servant, if these positive consequences were achieved. The facts are known; the how is left unexplained. The Servant did have victory over the consequences of death; death did not end his ministry. The prophet’s interest at this point was to speak to his audience about the benefits of the Servant’s suffering, so an extended discussion of the resurrection would have pushed the conversation off the central focus.
= Goal persuade people to understand positive consequences of Servant bearing sins so they might enjoy the benefits he provides! THEREFORE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED SO GOD IS PLEASED WITH HIM. God speaking connected with 52:13 how he will prosper and be exalted…
v.11
v.12 change from perfect, compted action verbs to imperfect ongoing intercession: implied by the change from perfect verbs (past completed action) to a final imperfect verb yapgîʿă “he will intervene, intercede.” There is no expanded description of his future intervention on behalf of the many, but the future orientation of this activity implies that the Servant’s work on behalf of the many will continue on into the future. This continued intervention/intercession might involve prayers for the many whose guilt he bore, or it might involve his intervention in the lives of many so that they will understand what he has done and accept the justification that he achieved when he bore their sins
THEOLOGICAL POINT: The suffering and death involved in this plan demonstrates the heavy penalty for rebellion against God, but the peace, healing, and justification gained though these acts uncovers the tremendous accomplishments of this gracious plan. Where every person fails, the Servant gained the victory. God was able to turn the humiliating death of the Servant into the glorious exaltation of the Messiah because through death the penalty for sin was paid.
