THE BARABBAS CROSS: WHY THE DEATH OF JESUS WAS NECESSARY

Fake praise seems like real praise but underneath fake praise has a characteristic that cannot be seen
Fake Praise needs a:
· Christ without commands
o
· Christ with changing commands
o What the Bible means to me
A few days earlier
· They were singing His praises
But now: Crucify Him
He rejected the praise and the adulation because He knew that His death was for our good
Mark 15:1 ESV
And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.

Mark 15:2 ESV
And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”
Mark 15:3 ESV
And the chief priests accused him of many things.
Mark 15:4 ESV
And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”
Mark 15:5 ESV
But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
Mark 15:6 ESV
Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.
Mark 15:7 ESV
And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.
Mark 15:8 ESV
And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.
Mark 15:9 ESV
And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
Mark 15:10 ESV
For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.
Mark 15:11 ESV
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.
Mark 15:12 ESV
And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
Mark 15:13 ESV
And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”
Mark 15:14 ESV
And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
Mark 15:15 ESV
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

WHAT DO YOU DO

THE BARABBAS CROSS: WHY THE DEATH OF JESUS WAS NECESSARY

I. He Was Un-Powering the Crippling Truth My Past (v7)

Mark 15:7 ESV
And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.

THE BEAUTY OF WHAT CHRIST DID FOR SINNERS ON THE CROSS IS THIS: WE DO NOT HAVE TO SEEK TO CHANGE OR DENY OUR PAST: WE HAVE A TWO WORD TESTIMONY: BUT GOD

Ephesians 2:4 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,

II. He Was Taking My Place

Mark 15:11 ESV
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.

KEY WORD: INSTEAD

Mark 15:15 ESV
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

NOTICE - THERE WAS A PENALTY TO PAY:
When they RELEASED Barabbas they SCOURGED JESUS

THE POWER IN HIS TAKING MY PLACE IS SEEN IN THE WORDS OF PILATE:

WHAT EVIL HAS HE DONE (V14)
Mark 15:14 ESV
And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”

He was trading His Passion for my Passions

NOT ONLY WAS HE TAKING MY PLACE HE WAS TAKING ON, THE WHOLE OF MY DEPRAVED, DISTURBED AND DAMNING PASSIONS
Mark 7:21 ESV
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

Mark 7:22 ESV
coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

Mark 7:23 ESV
All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

HE WAS MAKING AN EXCHANGE ON HIS CROSS

Isaiah 53:3 ESV
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Isaiah 53:4 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

Isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

III. He Was Changing My Status

From Bound/Free
o But prisoners have to walk free
Galatians 5:1 ESV
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
