Introduction

Imagine walking with Jesus for three years
He was your master, your teacher and your friend
You walked away from your family, your profession and your hometown
You watched Jesus restore sight to the blind, feed thousands from almost nothing and tell secrets no one knew
The government feared Him, the crowds cheered Him, the righteous hated Him
And just when you thought the world was about to change forever
They nailed Him to a cross and He was dead
What do you do now?
Go home? Look for the next Messiah? Maybe just go to bed and give up...
YouVersion: Just as He Said
We’re in 16:1-13 and Luke 24:13-48
Mark 16:1–8 ESV
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
And so Mary, Mary and Salome run to inform the disciples
But actually, Mark tells us that they hesitated
Many old copies of Mark end with that - “they said nothing for they were afraid”
What a strange way to end the gospel!
Jesus rose from the dead, but the ladies were afraid to talk about it - the end! WHAT?!
Mark 16:9–11 ESV
9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.
Mary finally starts to talk when she sees Jesus
But then the disciples don’t believe her
Mark 16:12–13 ESV
12 After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.
For people that walked with Jesus, they sure had a lot of doubt
We always give Thomas a hard time, but ALL the disciples struggled
There had to be an internal wrestle with everything

1. No situation is hopeless with Jesus

Put yourselves in the disciples shoes:
Many Messiah’s came
Jesus was different
Spoke with authority
Performed miracles
Claimed to be one with the Father
All done in 3 years!
But it all fell apart quickly
One of his own betrayed Him
Like I said last week:
Those who followed
Those who were fed
Those who were healed
Those who shouted Hosanna!
Then shouted “Crucify Him!”
Even His closest disciples fled and abandoned Him
He was arrested, shamed, mocked, and killed
Even His clothes were taken, left in a borrowed tomb
Remember the two disciples that saw Him?
Let’s look in depth at their story
Luke 24:13–17 ESV
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.
I LOVE Jesus’ sense of humor
I’m pretty sure He’s going to be messing with people all the time in heaven!
He knows they thought He was dead...
Hey guys! Whatcha talking about?

2. Without the resurrection, Jesus is just a sad story

It’s a chain of broken promises
When Jesus came, He promised:
Hope for the hurting
Rescue from sin
Victory over death
Without resurrection, all of those promises would have died right there with Jesus
Illustration: Yesterday, Houston and UCLA played in the Final Four
But they lost - they were SO CLOSE to playing in the college basketball championship!
But they missed it right at the end
I’m sure today those boys are not fun to be around
Moping, whining, looking sad
Imagine how the disciples feel...
Jesus came so close!
We’re here! In Jerusalem!
People were praising Him and cheering!
He came so close...
In fact, they don’t know just how “close” He is!
Jesus is standing right in front of them and they don’t even recognize Him!
Jesus made a lot of claims
He said He could forgive sin
He said He had the keys to heaven
He said He was One with the Father
He even said He was the Messiah
That is some God-level hope He offered
There is one more claim He made to Martha
John 11:25–27 ESV
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
What difference would anything make without the resurrection? If He was simply dead...
So what if He claimed to be God?
So what if He claimed to be the Messiah?
Many did those things - all ended the same - in death!
If Jesus died too - seems like He’s like everyone else - certainly not God!
And that’s what the two disciples are thinking - our friend is dead
Our hope is dead
Luke 24:18–24 ESV
18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
Don’t you get it bro? Where have you been?!
Jesus died! We thought He was the Messiah but He’s not
Some women said angels said He was alive but...
That happened in the morning, it’s now the afternoon
They heard He was alive, and just hours later they’re sad again
Even with angelic messages, they’ve given up
They’re not talking with excitement that He’s alive
They’re talking as though the situation is still a loss
“We HAD hoped… but guess not”
There’s one very important facet they’re missing:
Luke 24:25–27 ESV
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Jesus says, “How are you not getting this?!”
Pay attention to what has been said!
This is going to happen “JUST AS HE SAID!”

3. Jesus always backs up what He says

Not just Jesus, look at the PROPHETS!:
2 Samuel 7:12-16 - 1,000 years before Jesus
He would be a descendent of David
Hosea 11:1 - 750 years before Jesus
He would be called out of Egypt
Micah 5:2 - 700 years before Jesus
He would be born in Bethlehem
Daniel 9:24-27 - 600 years before Jesus
He would march into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday either 32 or 33 AD
Zechariah 9:9 - 500 years before Jesus
Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey symbolizing peace
Malachi 4:5-6 - 400 years before Jesus
Elijiah (or John the Baptist) would make a way for Jesus
All the way back to Adam and Eve, Jesus is spoken of!
As many as 350 prophecies were fulfilled by Jesus!
Jesus has been spoken of as the Messiah for generations!
It has been said! So why be surprised when it happens!
But there are some other things the prophets said
AND that Jesus said that they have forgotten...
Psalms - The Messiah is the rejected cornerstone
Righteous sufferer
Isaiah - He would be a suffering servant
A lamb led to slaughter
He would not remain dead
Zechariah - He will be pierced for our transgressions
Betrayed for 30 pieced of silver
And Jesus told the disciples directly as well
Jesus tells them after He fed the multitudes
Luke 9:21–22 ESV
21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Then Peter says “No Lord” and Jesus says “Get behind me Satan!”
He says it again at His Transfiguration
Again when He is “prepared for burial” by the costly perfume
Again on their way to Jerusalem
Jesus has been telling them over and over He will die and be raised again
And yet they’re like, “Welp, guess He’s dead. Let’s just be sad...”
Luke 24:28–31 ESV
28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
They’ve been so miserable, so blinded they don’t know it’s Jesus
And yet, when Jesus prays and breaks bread (Communion) their eyes open!
Remember, we take Communion to REMEMBER the Christ
Remember His sacrifice
Remember our need for a Savior
And suddenly, they see Jesus for who He is
Right in front of them the whole time
When everything clicks, it’s Jesus
We can learn that lesson too!
Church is confusing, Scripture is confusing, sermons are confusing
But when who you are clicks with who He is...
It’s Jesus! We see Him clear as day
So the disciples see Jesus:
It’s Jesus! Bye! Poof!
Luke 24:32–35 ESV
32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Oh yeah, I knew it all along!
Actually, I think their hearts did start to burn...
Notice this: when they start to see Jesus, there’s an excitement about the word of God
That same thing still happens for us
When we start to see Jesus, we want to go to the word and see all we can about Him

4. The resurrection gives us a desire to know the word

And they go tell everyone!
But no one believes...
At this point:
The women have seen the empty tomb
Mary has seen Jesus
Simon has seen Jesus
These 2 have seen Jesus
Mark 16:12–13 ESV
12 After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.
These guys just can’t believe based on witness testimony
Don’t worry, Jesus won’t leave them hanging
Luke 24:36–40 ESV
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
Their initial reaction is sheer terror
Suddenly Jesus appears from nowhere and they are horrified
Scary Nick story
We wanted to scare him, he scared us!
Jesus is suddenly there and they’re terrified!
But Jesus says, “Peace to you.”

5. The resurrection replaces fear with peace

Without the resurrection we always have to worry about the future
Am I going to heaven?
What happens when I die?
It’s all darkness
But with the resurrection, we don’t worry about death because we see there’s life!
1 Corinthians 15:16–19 ESV
16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
The resurrection is our hope!
Paul says if there is no resurrection, everyone should just feel sorry for us...
Because we know that resurrection means there’s something beyond this mess we live in
1 Corinthians 15:42–43 ESV
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
Jesus then shows that He has a body
He’s not just a ghost floating around
He says touch me and see!

6. If Jesus was resurrected, we will be also

When we’re resurrected we will have a new body
Guys like me, I’m looking forward to that!
No more high blood pressure, extra 30 pounds, gray hair
Jesus is the “firstfruits” of the resurrection
Means that Jesus was the first to be resurrected and we will follow
The way He came back is the way we come back
We will be human, with flesh and bone, but perfected and glorified
And Jesus goes further, showing just how great it’s going to be:
Luke 24:41–43 ESV
41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
Jesus still wants to eat, I think that’s so exciting!
Luke 24:44–48 ESV
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
Just as He said...
Jesus backs up what He says
Thousands of years of prophecy
The OT law
The fall of man
Jesus’ miracles
Everything points to what we have celebrated the last three days
Jesus took our sin, He died at our own hands, He was buried...
But then His frozen fingers started to move
His lungs filled with air
His heart started to beat
His eyes opened and He sat up
He walked out of the tomb and declared that death had been defeated!
And the world was never the same again...
