1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
Do not be afraid
Let’s go to Acts 22:30
In chapter 1 the resurrected Jesus teaches his disciples for 40 days
Paul meets the resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus
In chapter 22 Paul has been falsely accused., they want to have him killed for preaching the gospel to those who are not Jews.
He has shared the story of his conversion before the mob.
He is about to be flogged when the Roman soldiers realize that he is a Roman citizen.
The tribune is afraid when he realizes that he has committed a serious offense in almost flogging a Roman citizen
Paul is now brought before the council of the Jewish religious leaders.
30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.
1 And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.” 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3 Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?” 4 Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God’s high priest?” 5 And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’ ”
6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. 9 Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks.
11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”
Take courage, do not be afraid
KJV Be of Good cheer
10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
The resurrected Jesus offers hope.
Do not be afraid of the future. Do not be afraid of all the problems of life. Do not be afraid of death. Do not be afraid of life. The Lord Jesus is standing by you. He is with you always. He will never leave you or forsake you.
(1) The resurrection is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy
the resurrection in the OT
25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.
26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God,
27 whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!
Job, therefore, looks forward to his resurrection—to being restored to the land of the living after his death and to seeing the Lord. That remains our hope as well. In 1706 Matthew Henry wrote in his commentary on the Bible, “It is the blessedness of the blessed that they shall see God, shall see him as he is, see him face to face, and no longer through a glass darkly.”
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
(2) The resurrection was the hope of the Pharisees
What was a Pharisee?
(3) The resurrection of Jesus the Messiah has always been the hope of true believers
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Although crushed and killed he will see his offspring
6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”
22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,
23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
John Calvin warns us: “So great is the influence of preconceived opinion, that it brings darkness over the mind in the midst of the clearest light.”
11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
