We are living in unstable times
un•sta•ble \-ˈstā-bəl\ adjective
13th century: not stable: not firm or fixed: not constant: as
a: not steady in action or movement: IRREGULAR 〈an unstable pulse〉
b: wavering in purpose or intent: VACILLATING
c: lacking steadiness: apt to move, sway, or fall 〈an unstable tower〉
Unstable political times
We are a nation divided along party lines
For the first time in this country, a group or rioters broke into the nation’s capitol. 5 people died as a result
There are still people who don’t believe our current president is president
We are a nation divided along racial lines
What is happening to the Asian community is horrific - people being violently attached for no reason other than they are Asian
Many people are glued to their tv’s watching the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd
It reminds me of Genesis chapter 6
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Many people are divided regarding our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines.
Some people are pro mask and some people against masks
Some people are pro vaccination and some anti vaccination
Some people are pro churches staying open regardless of the dangers
Some people are against churches being open believing the spread if the virus is high in crowds
Funeral homes are working around the clock to memorialize those who died fro COVID-19 and multitudes are mourning.
We are living in unstable times – and as a result, many people are sad this very day
It reminds me of two popular groups of religious people during Jesus’ time – the Pharisees and the Sadducees (explain)
When you don’t believe in the resurrection you have no hope – hopelessness is some people’s reality
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.
Many people are living in a state of hopelessness looking for some kind of change.
On the day Jesus rose from the dead, He had a conversation with two men who had lost all hope (explain back story)
18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
These men have lost hope!
Many people have lost hope because of the instability of life as we know it today.
The instability I speak about exists because of sin in the world - I know its not popular but it is true.
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
This presents a twofold problem for man:
We are in a sinful state - which leads to problematic human interactions and outcomes
We are under the penalty of death because of our sin
And let me tell you, no one is righteous
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
You and I need a savior - we need someone who could provide forgiveness for sin and freedom from the death penalty.
This is where the good news starts.
Jesus died in our place!
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
The resurrection ensures eternal life!
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Jesus told Martha
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
Because He lives I can Face Tomorrow!
Because He lives all fear is Gone - because I know He hold the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives!
Jesus defeated death once and for all.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
Because He lives I can Face Tomorrow!
Because He lives all fear is Gone - because I know He hold the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives!
I’d like to read “What Does Hope Do For Mankind?” by - John Maxwell
Hope shines brightest when the hour is darkest.
Hope motivates when discouragement comes.
Hope energizes when the body is tired.
Hope sweetens while bitterness bites.
Hope sings when all melodies are gone.
Hope believes when evidence is eliminated.
Hope listens for answers when no one is talking.
Hope climbs over obstacles when no one is helping.
Hope endures hardship when no on is caring.
Hope smiles confidently when no one is laughing.
Hope reaches for answers when no one is asking.
Hope presses toward victory when no one is encouraging.
Hope dares to give when no one is sharing.
Hope brings the victory when no one is winning.
No matter the circumstances, you and I have a hope in Jesus Christ.
