Pentecost: Acts 2:22-39

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—

23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.

25 “For David says of Him,

‘I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE;

FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.

26 ‘THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED;

MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;

27 BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES,

NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.

28 ‘YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE;

YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.’

29 “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

30 “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,

31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.

32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.

33 “Therefore having been exalted ato the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says:

‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,

“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

35 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.” ’

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”

The Ingathering

37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, awhat shall we do?”

38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

Peter’s Sermon during the events that unfolded at Pentecost
Peter was explaining to crowds what had happened
explain briefly the events that resulted in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
Jesus was not given over to death
V. 24: It was impossible for Jesus to be held in the grip of death
He was raised and then ascended to heaven to be exalted at the right hand of God
This happened so that God could pour out His Spirit as our Comforter
Peter reminds then that these things were written about in prophetic word
He is telling them that this is the day
This is the day that God poured out His Holy Spirit upon humanity
This day, we became the Temple of the Living God
1. Those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord receive the Holy Spirit
Paul Tells us:
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 NASB95
Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
In context, Paul is correcting Sectarianism
The tendency for us to follow after a certain doctrine
or to attribute our salvation to work of men.
Our Salvation is only and can only come from the work of God
It is a gift that is received by belief, not works
He says, you should know better
“Do you not know that you are the Temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
You should already know this stuff
This is a reminded to all of us as well
2. We are the Temple of the Living God
God has poured out His Spirit upon us
This is the day that we remember this promise
If we are the Temple of God, how to we respond?
Very abstract concept.
But God.
But God gives us a picture and symbols to help us understand what this concept means.
What we are going to do this morning, is look at the elements of the tabernacle and discover Jesus.
In this discovery, we will learn how we are to respond to Jesus as the temple of His Holy Spirit.
We will begin to fill in the blanks on the back of your paper. We are going to start with number 16 and work our way to number 1.
I am not going to explain everything, we will not have enough time to go into great detail
16. The Curtain
The curtain enclosed this area
God gave Moses great detail in how to construct the Tabernacle
God commanded that Moses make it exactly
Kelly shared a devotional at Spring forum explaining the purpose of this curtain.
In many ways it represents us.
We are to be bound together as the body of Christ
15. The Door/Gate
One entrance, only one way into the presence of God
There is only one way to be Redeemed of God so that we can find peace.
Jesus is the door. He is the access point.
He is the only way to be Saved.
John 10:9-

9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

John 14:10-

6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

14. The Brazen Altar
This was the first structure that the people were confronted with when they entered the Tabernacle.
The purpose of the alter, before Jesus served as a place where the people could find temporary
atonement: covering
The sacrifice was placed on the altar and burnt until there was nothing left but ash.
Symbolizes the penalty of sin
It represented the cost that sin weighs upon our lives.
sin has a price; sin has consequences
This altar was constructed out of bronze.
Bronze is a symbol of judgement.
God has the authority to judge sin and remove it from our lives
Jesus fulfill this picture
In Christ we do not simply receive atonement for sin
In Jesus our Redemption is permanent.
When we receive Jesus as our Savior, he takes our sin from us and places it on the altar to be destroyed
There is still a cost
Jesus paid that cost when he came to die in our place
13. The Wash Basin
We enter through the gate of Jesus
We are confronted by our sin
Jesus removes this curse from us through His sacrifice
We then come to the washbasin
Served two purposes
Reflecting pool
Priests would have been covered in blood
They would have been covered in gore
The washbasin served as a place to look upon yourself as you were covered in the penalty of sin
