The account of the resurrection Jesus Christ

intro?

As we approach the end of the Matthew, the hearts of Jesus followers are broken.
Saturday was silent as the Jews observed the Passover.
But by 6pm the RL begin the plotting once again remembering the words of Jesus- concerning rising again
Guards are coerced out of Pilate and a sealed tomb contains the body of Christ.
But God..... The Disciples may not have remembered the plan
But God.... The Woman were just trying to grieve and be committed
But God never deviated from plan A.
There was not second of wavering or chaos in the plan of God.
The Resurrection changes everything.
The OT has declared a resurrection of the saints over and over again
Isaiah 26:19 ESV
Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.
Daniel 12:2 ESV
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Job 14:14 ESV
If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come.
Job 19:25–26 ESV
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God,
It was the hope of the saints of old
It still is the hope of saints anew
Without the resurrection we are a pitied people
1 Corinthians 15:13–14 ESV
But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.
But Gospels record the resurrection, the hope of every believing man or woman
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 ESV
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Even as I writing this sermon, I got word that some one I knew died.
A dead king, an occupied tomb, and a unfufilled promise make the Gospel the most heartless words ever uttered
But the grave is empty, the King is alive and the promise was kept! AMEN!
Its our hope- its always been our hope
MacArthur noted a that an early protestant missionary to the Ryukyu islands found a large mass grave revealing 11,000 heads taken from the body of Christians.
In 1637- the Japanese controlled the island and all Christians in the empire executed.
Because they knew they believed in the resurrection they, they buried the heads of the people a great distance from their body in hopes to prevent their resurrection.
That quite a length to go, for something you think is irrelevant.
Its not the cross that make Jesus the Savior so to speak.
Anyone could be crucified, but only one foretold it 3 separate times in the Gospels to his disciples and then actually did what he said he would do.
So lets look into the text this morning
Vs 1- Its Sunday morning- the Jews oriented every day in its position to the Sabbath
So Sunday would the day after the Sabbath, Monday 2 days after the Sabbath, etc
Its few hours since the Sabbath has ended- Technically at 6pm on Saturday
the other Gospel will tell us that it is still dark- almost morning
The two Marys were the same who were with Nicodemus and JoA when they buried Jesus on Friday
Vs2- Just like at his death- an earthquake announce his death and so also his resurrection
Angel comes from heaven and rolls back the stone and sat on top of it
Jesus needed no one to open the grave for to leave it
He had no struggles entering locked rooms to greet the disciples
MacArthur noted” the angel did not move the stone to let Jesus out, but to the let the women and disciples in”
Even now, this very morning, the Angel demands us to come see the empty tomb
Come rejoice in Christ victory
Vs3-4- His appearance is one reflecting the glory God himself
What else would be fitting than to proclaim the resurrected King than reflecting his glory
Their appearance is so amazing that the guards tremble in fear and fall unconscious
Had it been the full glory of God- they would fall not like dead men but in fact would be dead men
But amazingly, look at the comfort to the women
Vs 5-6 Dont be afraid- that speaks on multiple levels
This moment in particular- but also with the current events
The One we trusted our life to is dead, so what hope do we have
They, like the disciples didnt remember Jesus words of resurrection
-I know you looking for Jesus who was crucified but he isnt here, he is risen just like he said he would
Dont believe me, come check out where he has laying
May we not over look those words “as he said”
The authority of the Word is clearly seen
You can take the word and build your life on it with no reason to doubt for Christ always keeps his word
Vs 7- No rebuke to the disciples for running in fear, just go tell them to meet me in Galilee
They may have ran from him but thank God Beloved, Christ ran to them and to us
To meet us in our broken state
That is what Christ does- God doesnt work deals, he just delivers
He wont leave his people wandering, but he will meet them in their mess and restore them
Vs 8- So they take off to go tell the disciple
I can only imagine the conversation
“They will never believe us, Do you believe that, What happened?
But there was enough belief that they leave with joy
At his birth and resurrection, Angels bring forth good news of great joy to those who will believe
These faithful women believe and are sent with a message of joy
Vs9- whats better than an angelic messenger telling about Jesus resurrection?
Jesus himself
Clearly Jesus has glorified resurrected body here
He has an uncorruptible nature to him in that he is eternal and is not by the physical limits but yet he is material enough to have feet that can be touched
He will eat with his Disciples, Thomas will be instructed to touch the holes in his hand but yet he also appears in the upper room among with locked door.
However we see the primary response to seeing the glorified Christ is worship.
Vs 10-As we look here Jesus reiterates his words thru the angelic messenger but emphasizes the word “brothers”
The angel didnt say that previously but Jesus does now
I could have been, I know you all left me and I am coming to settle up
But instead, its the first reference to the blood bought relationship between Christ and his people- brothers...
the NT continues to reiterate that truth
If anyone is Christ he enjoys the benefits of Christ
God is also the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we share in that relationship as adopted children. Jesus, our brother, purchased with His blood the right for us to call His Father our Father. He is not ashamed to call us brothers because His righteousness is imputed to us, making us blameless as He is blameless (2 Corinthians 5:21).
From where the Gospel ministry of Jesus began, so to it becomes the send out of the disciples to all the world declaring the Good News of Great Joy
Its because of the resurrection we have the Great Commission
He is risen, he is risen indeed
So as we close lets apply some truths to leave with this Lords day
Those who stay close to the Lord often get to experience his power.
MacArthur made this note- Why does the Jesus not appear to the disciples first but instead the women?
His point is that they are the ones sticking closer to him
He said “Those who are there when Lords people gather for worship and prayer, who are there when His word is being taught, who are there when the lost are being won to Christ , who are there when others are being served in his name, who are regular in their times of private prayer- those are the ones who will most often experience first hand the work of God.”
You find the women coming to serve him in at his death which leads to them being ready to declare his life.
Where are we? easily found near Christ or are other telling us of things of God?
2. The empty tomb and resurrected Christ is the hope of every believer
The death and resurrection of Jesus is the central message of the early church
Its Peter in
Acts 2:23–25 ESV
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
and again in
Acts 4:10–12 ESV
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 10:39–43 ESV
And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
When Paul is in Corinth
1 Corinthians 2:2 ESV
For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Its the hope of the believer in Thessalonians
1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 ESV
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Also the Living hope in 1 Peter
1 Peter 1:3–4 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
To that, I declare to you that forgiveness is found in none other than the life, death and resurrection of Christ.
Its upon that cornerstone that we continue building our life here at Antioch
3. The resurrected Christ declares us to be brothers.
As Jesus sends the women to let the disciples know of his resurrection- he uses the word brothers for the first time to describe their relationship
Galatians 4:4–7 ESV
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
For all those in Christ- we have been brought into the family of God by the work of Christ
4. The resurrected Christ means judgement is certain.
John 5:22 ESV
For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Revelation 20:12 ESV
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
Revelation 20:15 ESV
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Judgement belongs to Christ alone
Come to Christ while forgiveness can be found.
