Outline

Introduction: When will we get there?
Hour
Disciples at Cana (2:4)
“An hour is coming and is now here” (5:25)
They sought to arrest him, but they could not because his hour had not yet come (7:30, 8:20)
The hour has come - when passion week starts (12:20)
“For this purpose I have come to this hour” (12:27)
Feast of Passover - when Jesus knew that his hour had come (13:1)
So what is this hour?
Being lifted up
As the snake was lifted up, so the Son of man must be lifted up (John 3:14-15)
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies (12:24)
For this purpose I have come (12:27)
When I am lifted up I will draw all people to myself (12:31-32)
On the cross, God judged the world. Jesus died to save us from God.
Just as the Israelites looked upon the snake in the wilderness, so we look upon Christ and we are saved.
How shall we describe this hour? Dark? Horrific? Abhorrent? Wicked? Injust?
Glory
We have seen his glory (1:14)
The final glory is the cross (2:11)
The hour of the cross is the hour of the glory of the Son of Man (6:23)
The Father glorifies the Son by making him our atonement (12:27-28)
The Father, the Son, the Spirit glorify themselves in loving us to the end (13:1)
Will you look upon him as the children of Israel looked on the snake? Will you find your hope, yoru rest, your comfort in him? Will you find there your salvation?
