Communion

In a new series of “Jesus in the Psalms” and I want to look back to Psalm 22 as we take communion
Psalm 22:1 ESV
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
We are going to take communion and think about that day, 3 days ago, that happened nearly 2,000 years ago.
The day our Lord and Saviour was put on the cross. Think about Thursday Night, the disciples are sitting around what would be known as Last Supper and Jesus knows what’s about to happen.
Jesus was the Ultimate Subsitute, he took our place on the cross. We didn’t get what we deserved | Jesus Didn’t get what he deserved, he took our sins, upon him.
We must understand, our God is just - The punishment for Sin is Death, but our God is mighty merciful. and he LOVES us.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
If we think about the Psalm of David, he cries out, he is in trouble, and Jesus, on the cross, knowing that all that were around him would know the Psalms, reached back and said the same words on the Cross;
Matthew 27:46 ESV
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
he has taken the entire sin of man on him. |In Agonising Pain | About to die | and reaches back to a psalm that not only prophesied his death, but his deliverance, which we will talk about shortly |
Right now we need to remember | Do this in REMEMBERANCE of me | His body was broken, his blood was shed out of complete LOVE for us.
John 19:30 ESV
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Our God is Just and Merciful

Resurrection Sunday - I want to concentrate on the criminals and begin in Luke.
Luke 23:32–33 ESV
Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.
Jesus was Fully Man and fully God.
African Missionaries, Chief, God climbed Down
Fully Man and Fully God - He had our emotions, he felt pain.
Context about crucifiction | Give Context into what Jesus Did | Who he was with
Worst Penalty Ever | Saved for the worst why? | Messy, Expensive, Painful, Paid roman gaurds to watch | Process = whipped 39 times | Carry own cross | Pull yourself up to breath | Day 4 beat your knees
context of the 2 thieves - not good men | Jesus in the middle of this, spat, mocked on, what did he say?
he didn’t say…Lord bring your angels with swords…He didn’t say “Lord these people will rot in hell”
“Forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing”
Because that is the God we serve.
One Criminal hurled insults at Jesus:
Luke 23:39 ESV
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”
Prideful, no need for grace or mercy
2nd Criminal:
Luke 23:40–41 ESV
But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”
One Criminal is saying that what he is getting is not fair, is not just.
And the other one has his heart, right postured toward Jesus. and he said what?
Luke 23:42 ESV
And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
What did Jesus say | A Criminal, that could not earn his way | Can’t come off the cross and do ANYTHING to be in right standing with God.
Luke 23:43 ESV
And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
I don’t deserve to be standing here:
My Testimony- Athiest, Abused Christians and Abused God, Blasphemed, I was dead
I read the Word…My heart was opened.
Ephesians 2:3–5 ESV
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Jesus didn’t come to make bad people Good, He came to make DEAD PEOPLE ALIVE.
Psalm 103:10–12 ESV
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
What did Jesus do? He took all of our Sins and He died, for us. When something dies, especially to God, something amazing happens, we are resurrected in Christ, we are raised up to be warriors of God.

Dying to self…

Think about this Criminal who’s life has just been saved, what would be the reaction?
innocent man died, so he could live | imagine - If the guards let him down | What would his entire life be devoted to?
Acts 2:42 ESV
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
But more than that he would die to himself and be resurrected in Christ.
Everytime something was completely handed over to God in the Bible, something great happened - but we have this idea that we have to get something first in order to give
5,000 loaves
Maybe you need to be handed over to be broken?
Garden of Gethsemene, Jesus prayed 3 times for it to be taken away - Jesus Willingly chose to die for our sins, he went to the cross for us.
We love Justice
*Speeding car
We love Justice, except when it happens to us.
I am Guilty | Lamb of God who was fully man and fully God died innocently for us | I thank God for his Grace and for what he did on the cross.
What do you have to kill? Anxiety? Pride? Ego?

The 3 Days

Jesus, Lying on cross in the 9th hour, at 3:00pm said “It is finished” | Earth Shook | The Veil tore from top to bottom *Holy of holies*
Because Jesus has died on the cross, the gates to God’s presence are open, and the age of the new covenant has dawned
Darkness fell across the land for 3 hours | No hope, No life, Satan was Laughing, Death had won, Jesus was buried in the tomb and the stone rolled across
Day 1, Nothing Happened
Day 2, Nothing Happened,
BUT ON THE THIRD DAY…When the women went to the tomb, the stone was ROLLED AWAY. Our Lord and Saviour had a battle in the grave, and on the THIRD DAY… everything that the Bible ever said would happen, happened - Every prophesy fulfilled, The work was completed, the dead had been done and…JESUS…IS…RISEN.
Psalm 16:9–11 ESV
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
There is one way. Jesus says “No one gets to the father except through me” Jesus is THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
We have to give over to God what we have, our lives, our anxiety, our works, everything and out of that place, out of that place of complete spiritual bankrupty, God can use you for his purpose and use you as his vessel.
Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good, he came to make Dead People ALIVE!!!
You are welcomed into this family.
