Cheap Grace vs Amazing Grace
This morning as we gather to celebrate what Jesus did on the cross and this morning it is important for us to know what it Cost Christ
Grace is defined as getting what you do not deserve
See you and I deserve death and eternal separation from God because of our sin
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For each and everyone of us have sinned, we have missed the mark that God has set
The mark is perfection and because you and I have sinned we deserved death
The wages of sin is death
Because of sin we deserve death and eternal separation from a holy God
Remember God cannot and will not be a part of sin
So because you and I have missed the mark of perfection by sinning we deserve death
This morning though we are celebrating what Jesus did on the cross
10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
It was Jesus’s death on the cross that paid our debt of sin
The perfect sacrifice that paid all of our debt to God
Jesus’s death on the cross was our perfect sacrifice which is why we no longer need to offer animals in church today
With that comes the removal that our sin cost something
We need to begin to understand that Jesus was a man who physically lived and physically walked the face of the earth
Jesus physically died on that cross to pay for your debt and my debt of sin
That is a costly price
But it would seem today that you and I are so far removed from what sin cost that sometimes we life how we want and church that cheapens what Jesus did on the cross
That cheapen the perfect sacrifice
Your sin and my sin cost Jesus his life
Church we need to understand that to pay for your debt and my debt of sin it cost God his sons life
It cost Jesus His life because of his love for us
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Church God sent his son to pay for your own debt of sin and my own debt of sin
Praise the Lord he did that because now because of that God looks on us as if we had never sinned for those who have accepted that free gift of Jesus dying on the cross
IF you and I accept the free gift of Jesus dying on the cross then we are justified before God right now
Just as If I’d Never Sinned
Church we do not deserve life and because Jesus choose to take our place we have that opportunity
But if we live like we want to knowing that Gods grace is sufficient
Because we life to throw verses around all the time right
Then we cheapen what Jesus did on the cross
If you and I live however we want to
Thinking oh Gods grace will cover me, because I already have a personal relationship with Christ
I know that His grace, Gods grace will cover me
Church when we do that, we cheapen what Jesus did on the cross, we cheapen what Jesus did by getting up and walking out of the grave
If that is how we live then we are living in cheap grace
Cheap grace is preaching of forgiveness of sin without requiring the repentance of sin says Dietrich Bonhoeffer
If we as a church do not preach repentance then we are not preaching what Jesus preached
If we are preaching just forgiveness of sin and oh don’t worry about it Gods grace is suffienct that is not the Gospel message
Dietrich Bonhoeffer said this
“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
If you have a personal relationship with Jesus and you think you can live how you want to because Gods grace will cover your sin
Then you are mistaken
Church we cannot continue to cheapen what Jesus did on the cross
It is not cheap Grace we are under it is a costly and very much amazing Grace that we are under
It is amazing because it is perfect and sufficient
It is amazing because it is Jesus
It is amazing because it is out of love that you and I are saved by Jesus’s death on the cross
It is absolutely amazing that the son of God himself chose to step down out of heaven and take our punishment for our sin
We are saved by his death
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
Church we are saved by the death of Jesus something we do not deserve
We are saved by Jesus’s beating
It was Jesus that took you place and my place in front of that wip and your place d my place on the cross
And your place and my place being separated from God
That is the amazingness of God’s grace that we do not deserve
If we believe that since Jesus died and paid for our sin all before we were even born doesn’t not me that we can just live how we want
It does not mean that our sin payment did not cost anything
It cost Jesus his life on the cross about 2000 years ago church
And because of that we no longer have to live a life of slavery to sin
That is the amazing Grace
That you and I bring nothing but our sin to the table and Jesus brings his life in place of ours that is amazing Grace
Because of that death, God looks as those of us who have accepted the free gift of Jesus’s death on the cross as if we have never sinned
Church we must not take advantage of God’s grace to us
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
We cannot continue to cheapen grace
We cannot continue to cheapen the death of Jesus on the cross
Our response to this morning and what we are celebrating is the amazing Grace of Jesus
We need to repent and run to Jesus
This morning instead of a normal invitation we want to invite you to go to any one of the table for the Lords Supper
I would encourage you to take this as a family as you remember what Jesus did on the cross for you
Pray
