1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Πορνεία primarily refers to using a harlot [TNTC], but then has come to refer to any kind of sexual evil
It refers to all kinds of unlawful sexual intercourse
to engage in sexual immorality of any kind, often with the implication of prostitution—‘to engage in illicit sex, to commit fornication, sexual immorality, fornication, prostitution.’1
What is the situation?
A man in the church was having sexual relations and probably living with his father’s wife. His “father’s wife” is stated and this gives us the impression that it was not with his mother but his stepmother.
The Bible clearly forbids this in these Scriptures:
8 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness.
30 “A man shall not take his father’s wife, so that he does not uncover his father’s nakedness.
20 “ ‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s nakedness.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
This type of immorality was not even accepted by those who were unbelievers!!
The marriage of full brothers and sisters was considered immoral throughout the Roman Empire except in Egypt; parent-child incest was universally abhorred throughout the Roman world. From the revulsion against the idea exhibited in the Greek Oedipus stories to slanders leveled against emperors, it was one of those few crimes that all cultures agreed were terrible. Its Roman legal punishment was banishment to an island. Relations with stepmothers were treated like relations with mothers—as incestuous. Here Paul uses the language of Leviticus 18:6–8.

Why is sexual immorality such a serious offense in the church?
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
20 but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood.
29 that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.”
25 But as for the Gentiles who have believed, we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;
Why do you think such behaviour was not dealt with in the church?

15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
As a warning to others
20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.
To be exercised with kindness
1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
Witnesses are sometimes required
16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.
God disciplines the ones He loves
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Paul was not physically present but the Corinthians had his full support in what was to be done. It was as if he was there himself.
my spirit is present. A difficult phrase that probably means that the disciplinary power of the Holy Spirit, which Paul knew to be present in his own ministry (see note on 4:19), would also be manifested in their meeting, because of the Corinthian church’s connection with Paul.

Deliver this man to Satan??
It means to excommunicate the man from the church
It means to expel the man from the Church to the realm where Satan rules. This assumes that Satan was used as an instrument of the church. It does not mean that Satan would have his way with him, but rather that ultimately the man might be saved.
It probably means that the man be excluded from gatherings of the believers for worship, meals, and the Lord’s Supper. The language should probably not be taken literally as indicating a personal surrendering of the man to Satan for physical harm.
Negatively the man is to be expelled from Christ’s kingdom, positively he is to be assigned to Satan’s kingdom.
The phrase indicates the loss of all Christian privileges.
It means to put the person under the power of Satan to harm him
Has the church become too soft on “SIN”?
