Introduction:
Welcome tonight
Good Friday
O Sacred Head v3
What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest Friend, for this, thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.
Pray; Now may the words of my mouth and the words of our hearts be pleasing in your sight, o Lord our Rock and our Redeemer
ME: Given a task that we failed. The test that did not go well. The job we didnt get. The promotion we were passed over for.
WE: All of us have these things. Each of us have things we did not accomplish.
John 19:28–30 ESV
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
God:
Jesus knowing that all was now accomplished
Jesus, the all knowing God.
He knew what needed to be accomplished
No matter how much we plan, we do not always know everything that needs to happen. In fact, sometimes we do everything we think we are supposed to and yet we still fail.
What was finished
Christ knew all that had been taken care of
All things prophesied had been fulfilled
This was the appointed time that was being waited for
We often do not know the right time. In this we can get frustrated and disappointed. Our Pastor in TX once said in a message that God waits until 11:59. But it only seems that way to us. He acts at his appointed time. Christ, as a member of the God-head knew that time had come and all things had been accomplished.
Christ, fully human felt the thirst
This is thought to be referring to Psalm 69: 3, 21
This was the final Scripture waiting to be fulfilled from the Psalm.
Psalm 69:3 ESV
3 I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.
Psalm 69:21 ESV
21 They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
After receiving the wine, “It is finished”
Everything was completed
It was a victory.
It was a declaration
It was not a mumbled phrase but a loud cry
It is finished!
Mark 15:37 ESV
37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
It is a word in the Greek in the Perfect tense meaning it was fully accomplished.
There is no way for us to fully accomplish anything without God’s empowerment. It is only through this sacrifice of Christ, the will of God, and the moving of the Holy Spirit that our salvation is accomplished.
He bowed his head and gave up his spirit
This is all according to the will of God
He had been delivered from one place to another through this time, but here it is in his will alone.
All of those previous deliveries were according to his will as well. But he was not simply killed, he bowed his head and as the son of God, gave up his spirit for us.
You
Good Friday is the final point to accomplish the payment for our sin.
It is a good Friday not because Christ died, but because he accomplished redemption for our sins.
We are judged under the law according to our works. Now from this willing sacrifice of Christ, the perfected lamb, the sacrifice provided by God, we are not judged according to our works but the salvific work of Christ.
WE: We together have fallen short of the law. We together cannot reach salvation alone.
Display of God’s love. How Deep the Fathers Love v3
Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished.
We not only fall short of the law, but we sin against God. As R.C. Sproul said sin is Cosmic treason. We ourselves had our guild in sin laid upon Christ that day. Not only did our sin hold him there, but at the same time We were among those that were among the mocking crowds.
For us, the sinful people deserving of death, God sent his son Jesus, who lived a perfect life, and yet willingly walked to the cross. Christ suffered according to the Fathers will and gave up his spirit. Today is a Good Friday because Christ was the perfected sacrifice. That Friday ended with Christ in the sealed tomb, but Sunday is coming.
