Greetings…
Today we continue the theme “Names of Jesus” which we have been going through on Sunday evenings.
Up to this point we have examined the names…
Only Begotten Son: Examines how Jesus is “radically distinctive and without equal” as both God and man.
Jesus: Examines the purpose of Jesus as the one that “rescues, delivers, and saves.”
Lord: Reminds us who should have all authority, power, and control over our lives.
Today we turn our attention to Jesus as “Christ The Messiah.”
In John 1 we find one of the first conversion accounts if you will.
John the Baptizer sees Jesus walking about and remarks “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
Two of John’s disciples go with Jesus and spend the day.
One of those men was Andrew, Peter’s brother.
It is here we find the apostle John’s inspired account of what Andrew told Peter about Jesus.
41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
When it comes to Jesus being called “Christ” we find him specifically called such in his differing constructions some 521 times.
The name “Jesus” is the only name he is called more often than “Christ.”
What does the name “Christ or Messiah” actually mean however?
The word Messiah is more the “Hebrew” term while Christ is the more “Greek” term.
This is why we only see the word “Messiah” translated “twice” but the word “Christ” 535 times total.
So with this all in mind let’s look at our first point today…
Anointed One
Anointed One
What Does This Mean?
What Does This Mean?
The word Messiah or Christ, as I just mentioned, means “anointed one” but what exactly does that mean?
Early on in the Old Testament we see the term used more in the literal sense, by which I mean we see it talking about those God had “anointed with oil” to represent that these ones were “The Lord’s anointed ones.”
20 I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him,
15 saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”
However, the term came to metaphorically signify as “one chosen and appointed by God to be his instrument.
1 Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed:
So the word “messiah” or “christ” came to represent those whom God appointed.
This is significant but in the Old Testament we start reading prophecies about “a specific one” that would be not “an anointed one of God’s” but “the anointed one” of God’s.
In other words, we start seeing prophecies about a specific “Messiah” or one chosen by God to lead his people back to God.
So…
What Makes Jesus The Anointed One?
What Makes Jesus The Anointed One?
The Old Testament prophecies gave way to several “proofs” by which one could determine who the “Anointed One” would be. For example…
The Christ would be the descendant of Abraham.
The father of the Israelites (Matthew 3:9) so to speak was also the earthly “father” by way of lineage of the Christ.
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The Christ would be a descendant of King David.
In a twist of divine irony, David who wanted to “build a house for God” was told “the LORD will make you a house” (2 Samuel 7:11) and in verses 16 we read…
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
Being a descendant of David meant that the Christ would be the last and everlasting king from David’s ancestry.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
The Christ would be sent to heal the brokenhearted.
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Summary
Summary
The point of all this is to say that Jesus is “the anointed one” prophesied and promised by God in the Old Testament.
He is the “one chosen by God” to lead us, his creation, back to the proper relationship we should have with our God.
There is yet another powerful aspect to Christ being “the Anointed One.”
That is that the Christ would not just be the Messiah or Christ for the Jews but for Jesus would be…
Christ For All
Christ For All
The Mystery Revealed.
The Mystery Revealed.
Throughout the Old Testament era the Hebrew people were convinced the Messiah or Christ would come and establish his kingdom with “them alone” so as to bring Israel back to its former glory.
Even the apostles were confused by this.
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
However, as the apostle Paul points out the mystery revealed to him and the other apostles and prophets was that the Messiah promised would be for all people, Jew and Gentile.
1 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.
4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things,
10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory.

Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
