Psalm 42 -- For the director of music. A maskil[c] of the Sons of Korah
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
3
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
4
These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One[d]
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.
5
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42 -- For the director of music. A maskil[c] of the Sons of Korah
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.
8
By day the LORD directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.
9
I say to God my Rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?”
10
My bones suffer mortal agony
as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

Psalm 43
Vindicate me, my God,
and plead my cause
against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me from those who are
deceitful and wicked.
2
You are God my stronghold.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?
3
Send me your light and your faithful
care,
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy
mountain,
to the place where you dwell.
4
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.

Jesus the living water
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this
water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever
drinks the water I give them will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give them will become in
them a spring of water welling up to eternal
life.”

3
If your depression stems from overwhelming circumstances, think
biblically about those circumstances.
Seek God Himself, not just relief.
4
Recognize it and begin to confront yourself as to why you’re
depressed.

Fill my Cup, Lord
Like the woman at the well I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy;
And then I heard my Savior speaking:
“Draw from My well that never shall run dry.”
Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord,
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul,
Bread of heaven, feed me ‘til I want no more,
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!

Questions to ponder
How much have we experienced this thirsting like the deer panting for the
water brooks? Or have we become desensitized, callused, and so unable to
recognize the symptoms of seeking to quench our thirst at the wrong
fountains?
To what degree has this reality, the reality of the barrenness of the details
of life and the inability of other things to quench our thirst and give real
satisfaction to our souls, truly affected us so that it has begun to change
our values, priorities, and pursuits that we might, like Hagar, have our eyes
opened to see the well that God has provided and go there to fill our skin
with the water of His life?
