And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Introduction:
Resurrection - the rising again to life of all the human dead before the final judgment.
Our Sin
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Jesus knew not sin, it was our sin that nailed Him to the Tree.
Our Sicknesses
Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Scripture doesn’t say how many stripes Jesus received. It is assumed that he was given 39 because it was customary to give 40 lashes minus one or 39.
It was called 40 lashes minus one because it was assumed that 40 or more lashes would kill somesone.
The was whip with a cat of nine tails, a whip with nine lashings embedded with bits of metal glass and bone.
If he failed to kill a man in forty lashes, the flogger would face death.
This was to insure that flogger would not hold back in the meting out the punishment.
The Jews h
Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
The Jews had a limit of 39 lashes.
Some say that there was 39 diseases known to man at this time, Jesus die for them all.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities:
The chastisement of our peace was upon him;
And with his stripes we are healed.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Our Triumph
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
“Our king has triumphed over sin and over death and over hell. Therefore there is peace, freedom, hope, and joy for all who live under his rule!”
Religion tells you what you must do.
The gospel tells you what Jesus Christ has done.
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” he was saying, “Everything that was needed for you to be reconciled to God and brought into life everlasting was fully accomplished in my death and resurrection.”
All that remains for us is to receive what he has accomplished and now offers as a gift.
We do that by turning to him, believing in him, embracing him as our Savior, and submitting to him as our Lord.
