God’s Glory
One of the main reasons that I’m studing this is because one of the key arguments for the existence of evil is that it is caused to increase or for the glory of God. I don’t understand this reason yet, since I’m just looking into this suggestion or explanation for evil. But even at this point, I need to better understand the definition of glory.
John Piper defines God’s glory like this: “The glory of God is the infinite beauty and greatness of God’s manifold perfections. The infinite beauty—and I am focusing on the manifestation of his character and his worth and his attributes — all of his perfections and greatness are beautiful as they are seen, and there are many of them. That is why I use the word manifold.”
Excerpt from the attributes of God on internet……The glory of God is of course, inseparable from his other attributes, so God is eternally, infinitely, unchangingly glorious. His radiance and beauty emanate from all that his is and all that he does. Isaiah 43:7 [ Isaiah 43:7 (ESV) 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” ] says that man was created by God for his glory. So our whole existence and purpose is to glorify him, as we are created in his image and do the good work he has prepared for us to do. Inevitably, man will try to find glory in other things, or to try and make himself an object of glory. And when those things fail to bring us satisfaction, we must decide to humble ourselves and turn our gaze back to the only one who is worthy of glory.
kābôd means “glory” in most of the 200 contexts in which it is found. Associated with the meaning “glory” is the idea of “honor,” which is found approximately thirty times.[Renn, S. D. (Ed.). (2005). Glory. In Expository Dictionary of Bible Words: Word Studies for Key English Bible Words Based on the Hebrew and Greek Texts (p. 435). Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers.]
OT Key Exodus 24:16 (ESV) 16 The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.
Exodus 34:29–30 (ESV) 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.
Exodus 40:34–35 (ESV) 34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
Psalm 19:1 (ESV) 1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Isaiah 42:8 (ESV) 8 I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.
Addresses man/s glory , his honor = Psalm 106:19–20 (ESV) 19 They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a metal image. 20 They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. .
My summary definition - Glory expresses the external recognition of God’s supremacy, beauty, majesty. Honor is a lessor comparison to glory. Glory is an attitude of ultimate reverence by someone or something outside of yourself. So what is expressed is honor received by others, ,i.e., from or to family, believers, ancestors, God, etc. In God’s case, His glory is the ultimate appreciation and recognition of His perfection, beauty, justice, etc.
Dictionary = “attribute” =a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something. "flexibility and mobility are the key attributes of our army"
synonyms:= : a distinguishing characteristic, trait, or feature
Definition: Attribute of God
Definition = An attribute of God is an element of God; it is a description of a component of His essence. An attribute is an inherent characteristic of God. It is a description of who and what God is.
An attribute of God is something true about him. His attributes cannot be divided or separated from Him. Each attribute is unchanging, co equal, indivisible. While a single attribute or more may be shown in a specific instance, all the attributes are still in existence. And according to the context, some attributes may be supporting the primary attribute that is the focus of a specific instance.
Attributes can come together and proclaim or determine his glory is above anything else. Glory is considered an attribute of God.
This glory can be manifested physically by seeing the radiance of glory. Examples: Luke 9:29–31 (ESV) 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. ....Luke 9:29–31 (ESV) 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
.......Exodus 24:15–17 (ESV) 15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.
an unseen evidence of the greatness of God as in or a simile, John 1:14 (ESV) 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Glory can be seen in things or people which were in close contact with God’s glory
