Heb. 11: 23-29

Story Starts with his Parents

We go to Exodus
Chapter 2 gives the prologue
Chapter 6 gives genealogy of Moses, Aaron and Miriam
…a man from the house of Levi...
>>>Aaron’s son’s were the Levites
A bit of irony—Pharaoh’s command was to throw male children into the river…Moses was (sort of) thrown...
Faith of his parents rewarded, Moses is saved and his mother becomes his nurse
Likely brought up in his own home, taught Hebrew history and acquired knowledge of God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

Moses Made a Choice

A slave, slave-driver and Moses
Steven’s speech in Acts 7 gives a good summary of his life
Reading only the Exodus account, we may see personal motives; knowing all of Scripture gives us the big picture
He had his encounter with Yahweh—
YAHWEH—i AM WHO I AM
Thus began the process leading to the Exodus
Passover—imagine explaining that to a nation of people that knew nothing but oppression

Then, the Red Sea

It was Moses who had the faith
Exodus 14:13–14 ESV
And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

A Couple Final Points

Take all of Scripture to get the WHOLE story
We have Exodus, the account of Moses, by Moses
We have the inspired sermon of Stephen…fleshing out the details
…the writing of the author of Hebrews who shows the linkage between faith and action
>>>What Heb. 11 is all about
Also...
What about the

reproach of Christ

Not saying that Moses understood Christ
Though he would be the prophet to which Jesus is compared
Saying that the reproach he took on was not unlike what Jesus would take on

for he endured as seeing him who is invisible

Sounds like
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
