Savior of all, even non-Jews. Son of Man. Easy to relate to.

Chapter 8

From receivers to servers. Receivers become servers. What can the servers expect.

Q: Who’s exempt from becoming a server?

Keep this in mind as we study that everyone will be called by God to serve somewhere so these lesson apply.

2 parables and 4 miracles.

Sermon on the mount.

The old way is out. The new is in.

Known by your fruit: 2 types. Good and evil

Foundation you build on: 2 types. Solid and sandy. Good and evil

Ch.7

1st non-Jew healed. Centurion’s servant

1st dead person raised. Widow’s son. Jesus can do this.

JB: “Are you the One?”

X: Is. 35 plus the dead are raised.

2 Groups. Those who accept JB and X vs. those who reject

2 Types. Simon the Pharisee did not appreciate X, pay much attention, wash his feet. The pro who washed his feet w/ expensive perfume, her tears and hair showed great appreciation and gratitude.

She was saved by her faith. King; at his feet. Appreciated the grace that Jesus had shown her.

Sending the 12 out.

So this chapter is prepping them to go out.

Ch. 8

Parable of the sower from the Farmer’s perspective.

Yes we can learn about soil. But the point is what the disciples can expect when they cast the seed, the gospel.

Frustration! Most won’t stick w/ it. Some will.

Parable of the lamp. Those that receive the word, share it by letting their light shine.

consider carefully, evaluate how you listen.

Implies you do what it says.

James wrote a similar verse and he is waiting outside w/ Mary to see Jesus.

Those closest to X are those who hear and do his word

Not Mother and brothers, necessarily

4 Miracles

Miracle #1

Calms the storm

Authority over nature

Who is this for? Who’s in the boat?

The disciples, not the masses.

Did X not know the storm was coming?

He did it on purpose.

He had just said listen carefully and put my words into practice.

Then, let’s boat over to the other side.

Assumption? They easy trip and safe arrival.

X falls asleep. He’s not worried. So, they don’t worry…at first.

The terrain contributed to squalls like this. Not unusual. Like tornadoes in the midwest.

What did the fishermen understand about how much trouble they were in? Tax collectors?

Attitude? Emotion? when they woke X.

Scared. Panic. Don’t you care? We are going to drown.

Jesus rebuked the storm and it responded.

Then He rebuked the men. Will they respond?

Fear and amazement. Respect. Awe.

A word changed the weather.

Lessons:

You’re only going to make it if you trust X.

Don’t panic in tough situations. No fear.

Jesus knew what was coming when He sent you into it and He’s not afraid.

Authority over whatever challenges you.

Only the Savior could do this. Proof.

Miracle #2

Legion of demons

Authority over an army of demons

The man was under the powerful control of the demons.

Legion = 6000 roman soldiers. Probably a figure of speech representing many demons.

The demons knew who Jesus is. Not saved.

Also knew Jesus has power over them, all of them.

Their strength combined can control a man. But can’t touch X.

The abyss. The place of the dead. Hell. Final judgment for demons.

Can also be a watery grave. Irony this is how it ended up.

They requested to go into the pigs thinking it was their escape.

X complied. Then sent the pigs over the cliff into their watery grave. The abyss. They thought they’d won. For a minute.

Like a lamp, some shared the light of what happened to the man.

The seed cast on various types of soil right here.

Others were angry b/c X cost them a lot of money. They wanted Jesus to leave.

Lessons:

There will be ppl who will be more concerned about their money, status, job, career, then getting to heaven.

Rejection when ppl understand the cost.

Understand your opposition and what they want.

Not the ppl. Not the pigs. Not flesh and blood.

But, who wins in the end?

Rich on earth vs. rich in heaven.

Power base. Politics. Censorship.

Miracles #3 & #4

Miracle in a miracle

The Woman & the Child

Authority over sickness and death. Anyone can get new life.

Jairus, the Jewish synagogue ruler. He daughter was sick. Dying

The Jewish woman who had a bleeding problem.

Hemorrhaging to death. Dying.

Similarities.

Girl was 12 years old. Sick all her life. Terminal since birth.

Woman had been healthy, but bleeding for 12 years. Terminal.

Jairus fell at X feet.

The Woman touched the hem of his cloak, at the ground.

King.

Remember the woman who fell at Jesus’ feet at Simon’s house and washed his feet w/ perfume, tears, and hair.

Faith in their king to be given another chance to live.

The woman’s situ.

Ceremonially unclean for 12 years. No close contact w/ anyone. Socially distant. No synagogue. No worship. No family contact or friends.

She was isolated and alone.

Imagine how the crowd would respond if they recognized her.

A riot. Stone her. Had to sneak up. Stress!

No one could heal her. Implied they made her situ worse trying.

How did Jesus respond when He knew she’d been healed?

Called her out. Why? “Daughter: Relationship.

To show the crowd she’s safe to be around now.

He restored her life, spiritual life, social life, and physical life.

While this was going on, Jairus’ daughter died.

Too late. Jesus’ timing was bad. He can’t do anything now.

Limitations.

X said. No fear. Just faith. (Think disciples in the boat)

When X used the term daughter for the woman what do you think that meant to Jairus?

Jairus, synagogue ruler, let Jesus in his house even though he had touched the woman who was unclean.

Didn’t believe Jesus was unclean.

Jesus is greater than the law. Authority over it. God.

Professional mourners in the house. Compare the compassion.

They laughed when Jesus said she wasn’t dead.

Sarah laughed when the Lord said she’d have a son.

Lack of faith.

Isaac means laughter in Hebrew.

Private miracle. Only James, Peter and John. Key servers.

Healing was immediate and complete.

No need for therapy.

Oxygen to the brain. Muscle atrophy.

No complications. No problems.

She ate. Her system worked perfectly.

For the first time in her life she was healthy.

What else might be going on for the servers to get?

The girl, dead since birth, can receive new life.

Non-Jews, always apart from God, can be saved by faith.

The woman, healthy then not dying, can receive new life.

Jews, had been close to God, wandered away, can return by faith and be saved.

Cast the seed, let your light shine on all ppl.

Receivers become servers.

What can servers expect? (who are the servers in the room?”

Rejection by most

Frustration

Acceptance by a few

Share your light and receive more

Close rel w/ X by hearing and doing His word

Expect t/b sent into storms.

Don’t panic. Ask and X will calm the storm and you.

Expect strong opposition

PPL will reject you if you threaten their $, status, reputation.

Sermon on the mount hold your earthly possessions lightly

God will give anyone new life who falls at his feet in faith.

Lessons:

Touched by Jesus you don’t corrupt Him, He cleans you.
