Luke 6:27-36

Luke 6:27 ESV
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
“But” - Luke 6:20-26 (Study at home)
“I say to you who hear” - We all have to have a willingness to to hear / listen
We have to be teachable
“Love your enemies”
Love: to have a great affection or care for or loyalty towards.
Enemies: a personal enemy.
Who were the people who were their enemies and who hated, cursed, and mistreated them?
The listeners would probably first think of the Romans who suppressed them and then of the Gentiles in general.
But even among the Jews there were enemies because of religious, social, and economic conditions
The reference is to people who hate the disciples because they are followers of Jesus
Luke gives us a definition of an enemy
Luke 6:22 ESV
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!
The question is.... Are the people that I consider enemies and haters because I am a follower of Jesus?
How many enemies/haters do you really have because you follow Jesus?
This changes my perspective of people I am tripping over!
Do I really have enemies or People that have their own personal emotional issues:
Insecurities
Feelings of rejection
Remember this…
When people lack love, safety, and connection
They can become enemies to themselves and others!
That’s why people can be upset at you for no reason.
Thats why Love is not an emotional affection here, but the desire to do good to other persons, even to enemies who hate and curse you [NIGTC].
Love and doing good = Action
The way I respond will determine everything!
Humility is Key
Our response / Behavior / Action / Love can change a persons life!
Luke 6:28 ESV
bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
Bless: to invoke (or enact) divine favor, often implying a positive disposition or kind actions toward the recipient.
Curse: to curse (invoke harm) v. — to invoke divine harm or evil upon someone or something.
Abuse: (verbally) v. — to use foul or abusive language towards or about.
Pray! Don’t respond..... PRAY
Luke 6:29 ESV
To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.
“To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also”
It’s an extreme example (Hyperbole: exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally.)
Jesus wanted to point out how we shouldn’t try to get revenge but have an attitude of love .
“From one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either”
Another view is a situation in which someone stole a coat after it had been removed and put aside to keep it from interfering with work and the owner then calls out to the thief that he will give him his shirt as well [Su].
Luke 6:30–31 ESV
Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
“Give to everyone who begs from you” -
We are to give to everyone what we can and which is in accord with love for that person
Be Humble - A true picture of being the Image of Christ
Luke 6:32–36 ESV
“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Preach Jesus…
Love your enemies
Do good
Lend
Expect nothing in return
Your reward will be great!
Listen to this....
“For he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”
He (God)
My actions can determine the outcome of so many situations…
