I have a show that I watched called How I met your mother. One of the characters Barney had many rules to life and one of his rules was that New is always better. I guess it really depends on the situation.

Some people like old things. That old chevy or old house someone may think that they can restore it back to its original state.

One of the reasons that I like new over old is that I don’t inherit the old problems of the item. For example if I buy an old house I may discover that the wiring is bad, or there is a leak in the basement. But with new I don’t have any of those problems.

You can not mix old and new

New Living Translation Chapter 9

16 “Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.

17 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine is stored in new wineskins so that both are preserved.”

New Living Translation Chapter 5

36 Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.

37 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. 38 New wine must be stored in new wineskins. 39 But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”

Jesus is being questioned about fasting. But fasting is the point of discussion it is not the main point of the discussion. If you go further in Luke you see that Jesus is being questioned about Sabbath.

The Pharisees wanted everything to stay the same. They liked to old way of things. But Jesus came to set up a new covenant. The Pharisees were ok if Jesus and his disciples would fall into line. Do things they way they did But Jesus wanted to restore the relationship between God and Man.

Some people do this when they become Christians. They want to try to keep their old life. Maybe they want to keep their new life hidden. They want to live as nothing is changed. When you became a Christian did you try to keep part of your old life? Is there some part of your old self you are holding onto.

26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

What does the new life look like?

Put to death earthly thing Colossians 3:5-11

Clothe yourselves with… Colossians 3:12

In order to live the new life in Christ you must put to death the old life.
