1 Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.7 And the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
The Lord is omniscient. There is absolutely nothing hidden from his eyes. There is nothing that has happened, that is happening, or that will happen that God does not have fully knowledge of. Nothing ever occurs to God that would surprise Him or catch Him off guard.
Everything that exists, exists because God created it. When the Lord looks upon all that He has created, He see’s all just as it is. He knows the number of strands of hair on every persons head. He is not out of sink with modern technology, the latest discoveries, or new ideas. In fact, from eternity past, God was infinitely ahead of the curve before He created the universe and established its foundations.
He see’s the good and the evil of our day. He knows the heart of man very well. He knows the exact intent of the thoughts or imaginations of the heart of mankind.
Our Lord Jesus warns that the days of Noah would return to the world.
37 “For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.
26 “And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it shall be also in the days of the Son of Man:
What does He mean by this? He means that humanity would return to same wickedness and depravity, as it had experienced in the days leading to the judgment of God, the flood. Christ Jesus will return to this earth with a sword and His holy angels with Him, to render judgment and it will be a righteous judgment upon the world.
Jesus said the time of His coming is a sealed mystery only known to the Father. You don’t know and I don’t know when the Lord will return. Even the angels of Heaven, who will accompany Him, do not know the day or the hour, it is not intended for us to know, but we can observe and tell the season and the age in which we live. We can see the hand writing on the wall, so to speak. And it certainly appears to be close in my opinion.
But never the less, the world has been put on notice. It is not a matter of “if,” but “when.” Jesus is coming like a thief in the night. When humanity does not expect it to occur, that’s when He’s coming to judge the world. By all indications, it could be anytime.
In the Days of Noah, in spite of Noah the prophets preaching, the people just simply yawned in the face of God. It is the same way today. When the coming judgment is revealed in preaching, the world still yawns in the face of God and His preachers. The majority of the world does not seem to have any grasp of this reality, but the world is slated for certain judgement by fire, in the future. For the true believer, it is certain, and there is no doubt. When a world lies in such disbelief, nothing seems to shake them.
As it was in the days of Noah, even to the day that the flood came, what were the people doing leading up to the flood? Well the scriptures tells us that the people were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage… (that is, they were doing whatever they chose to do, they were just as assured as they could be that tomorrow was going to come just like yesterday had come. After all, it had never even rained a drop, they didn’t believe it could rain, why would they believe Noah, and concerned themselves about a flood that would destroy the world?
So here’s the story, by chapter 6 in the Book of Genesis, the whole world had fallen into apostasy. They had parted ways with God their Creator and did whatever the flesh desired. It was a time of unholy alliances. As a result of their departure from their Creator, it was a time of chaos, confusion, and unrest. It was a time of hostility, rebellion, and disregard. They had become especially mighty men to do wickedness. They became well known for their wickedness and for their unrestrained lust.
Now look at what the Bible says that the Lord saw.
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
We have all heard the expression, “just follow your heart”! Well how can you trust the heart? That’s just what the people before the flood were doing. Whatever their godless hearts desired, that’s what they did.
The Lord said in Matthew 15:19
19 “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
You see, historically, any time that humanity does not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, He has given them over to a depraved mind. That is, because of their stubbornness and rebellion, God gave them over to fill themselves with every kind of evil that their depraved minds desired.
Paul says in his letter to the Romans...
5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,6 who will render to every man according to his deeds:
Dear friend, there are always consequences for sin. Here in the pre-flood age, the heart and mind of man had become so depraved that verse six says....
6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Since God is a “just” God, He knew what He must do…and it grieved His heart.
You see, it was never God’s will that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance.
7 And the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”
God’s heart was grieved that He would have to “destroy man who He had created from the face of the earth. Not only man but all land dwelling animals would perish in the flood.
You may ask, “how could a God of love do such a heartless thing, as destroy the earth and all life on it”? Let me tell you this, God is not one who sinned, humanity did.
We find that He loved the world so much that He would willingly give up His only begotten Son, to die in the place of the “who-so-ever’s.”
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Why does Noah find grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Just as the Lord saw the wicked depraved heart of humanity, He saw righteousness in Noah.
The same sins that produced the flood in Noah’s day, those same sins have reached up to heaven today. And God is going to judge the world one more time. It was water the first time; but it will be fire the next time.
The wrath of God is coming and the one and only escape is to repent, turn away from sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
With the spiritual depravity that the world is in today, it must have some resemblance of the days of Noah.
The ark of Noah is a symbol of Christ our Lord. And He has extended the invitation by grace to save all of those who would come to Him in faith.
Let me say this, it was God who shut the door of the ark. Noah couldn’t open it, it was out of his hands. And when it began to rain and the waters began to pool, the people began to call out to Noah, let us in, let us in. But the Bible speaks of our Lord as “He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens.
Here’s a warning. One day, it will be too late. There will come a close to the age of grace. There will come a time when it will be too late to say, “Lord, have mercy on me.”
Today if your will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
6 Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
If you have never called on Him, do it, don’t wait.
