Post Resurrection appearence sermon in Easter series

Notes
Transcript
Luke 24:13 CSB
Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

INTRO—

[Remember…G.O.S.P.E.L. … (vid?)]
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 CSB
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:5–7 CSB
and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
The context set (Luke 24.13-16):
The afternoon of Resurrection Sunday. (Luke 24.13)
A seven-mile (approx. 1.75 - 2.25 hours) journey to Emmaus (Luke 24.13)
Discussing & ‘discussing’ what had taken place. (Luke 24.14-15a)
Jesus came near, but they were prevented from recognizing him. (Luke 24.15b-16)
…Let’s walk with them, and listen when Jesus speaks.

Jesus Inquires (Luke 24.17-18)

Jesus essentially asks, “Why are you guys having words?”… “What is the issue you are debating back and forth?”
Cleopas speaks up…appearing somewhat dumbfounded, “Are you the only person in Jerusalem who seriously hasn’t heard?”

Jesus Presses [the Point] (Luke 24.19-24)

Jesus pushes back, “What things?”
This requires these disciples to show where they are…not on the journey, but in their hearts and minds...
The events adequately recounted...
Who Jesus is, not so much (Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet…hoping he was the one about to redeem Israel…Now his body is missing and all sorts of rumors)
They were a mess of information and emotions…like us.

Jesus Makes the Point (Luke 24.25-27)

Jesus—the Stranger—makes THE point, “…believe all the prophets have spoken…(about) the Messiah...”
This might sound like a theological lecture, but I’m thinking it was far more devotional, relational, tangible (from Moses & all the Prophets).

Jesus Reveals (Luke 24.28-31)

Jesus, at meal time, did…& SAID…something quite familiar, and beautiful—in the blessing.
In his Providence, God used something familiar…something personally significant…to open their eyes.

CONCL—

The conclusion reached & retold (Luke 24.32-35)
The response to Jesus’ blessing further ignited what God stirred in them as Jesus recounted the beautiful promises from the OT concerning himself. The stirring of mind and heart!!!
They were so immediately and significantly reached…that they ‘had to’ set back out for Jerusalem (might’ve only taken them 1:30 or less to make it back…ya think?)!
Everyone has been stirred…and shares the encouragement and excitement! (Simon & the Emmaus Two, especially)
Further verification (Luke 24.36-43)
AND…as they are enjoying their fellowship...
Luke 24:36 CSB
As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you!”
Luke 24:35 CSB
Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
