Job 19:25–27 NIV84
I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!
One writer calls this passage a high peak in in the Old Testament in which one can view the New Testament.
What does Redeemer mean?
The Hebrew word here is go’el. It means redeem, ransom, kinsmen, to set free. Job needed to be set free from the ridicule and from friends that treated him so horribly.
We, in some form or another, are all in need of redemption.
Christians look to Jesus as our Redeemer. He sets us free from slavery to sin and guilt!
Ephesians 1:7 NIV84
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace
Ephesians 1:14 NIV84
who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Colossians 1:14 NIV84
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 9:12 NIV84
He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.
The phrase in verse 25 “He will stand” is an interesting phrase. It is actually a legal phrase implying that one will stand as a witness to another.
It is the same meaning as what is used in a couple Old Testament passages:
Deuteronomy 19:15–16 NIV84
One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime,
Psalm 27:12 NIV84
Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence.
Job had a rich, personal relationship with God and he knew it had to exist beyond the grave. Other Old Testament writers did too.
They also knew that would be an afterlife that would reveal redemption.
Psalm 16:7–11 NIV84
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Isaiah 26:19 NIV84
But your dead will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.
Hosea 13:14 NIV84
“I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction? “I will have no compassion,
Job knew God was his redeemer. He knew that his body would be restored.
Job 19:26 NIV84
And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God;
Just was coming in the afterlife for Job.
Again, in this is shown in other Old Testament passages like Psalm 49:15:
Psalm 49:15 NIV84
But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Selah
The example of Job’s faith is beautiful to me. He lives according to his life creed. He lives according to his faith. He lives according to the deep relationship he has with God. He has cleared his conscience and been able to move away from any sin in his life and furthermore, he had the hope of the expected blessed resurrection.
We do not have to worry about expecting the resurrection because we are fortunate to know that it has already happened.
As a result, we can trust in the fact that we have a Redeemer who has fulfilled what Job dreamed of!
His name is Jesus and Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us!
John 14:16–17 NIV84
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
1 John 2:1 NIV84
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
Therefore, let’s praise our Lord and tell others about what He has done!
Psalm 9:1–2 NIV84
I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
