God is For You

Psalm 56:5–9 KJV 1900
5 Every day they wrest my words: All their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, They mark my steps, When they wait for my soul. 7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In thine anger cast down the people, O God. 8 Thou tellest my wanderings: Put thou my tears into thy bottle: Are they not in thy book? 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: This I know; for God is for me.
David has had a whirlwind of a life… He went from being a lowly shepherd to the victorious warrior over Goliath
His immediate fame for killing Goliath changed everything… He is no longer just the “little brother” tending sheep.
He has women singing songs about his valiance - though this is the first recorded time in a military battle…
The girls were singing “Saul hath slain his thousands, but David his tens of thousands”
David was elevated
Saul was outraged...
David - this man who had acted in faith finds himself later being controlled by something that will lead to him being in a bad place...
Spiritually
Mentally
Physically
But when the whirlwind begins to slow, we find a statement made by David that I think will be a help to each of us.
Psalm 56:9 KJV 1900
9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: This I know; for God is for me.

God is For You

The events of Ps 56 is found in 1sam. 21-22
I want to look at 3 things this morning that were a part of David’s plight...
Fear
1 Samuel 21:10 KJV 1900
10 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
Fear is the enemy of faith...
David a man who lived by faith
David’s fear caused him to look for safety in the enemy camp
David’s fear caused him to think the enemy of God’s people / the enemies of God was his safety net...
No matter how bad things get in our life where we are...
If God is Sovereign
If God is Able
Then why in heaven’s name would we move to a place outside the umbrella of God’s blessings?
David knew God was able - yet he fled… He fled the wrong way...
Jonah… God’s will vs his will - He fled - went down to Joppa from the presence of the Lord
Elimelech & Naomi - book of Ruth - they went down to Moab - because there was a famine in the land...
If God Can’t take care of you here, what makes us think he will take care of us somewhere else...
If God can’t take care of us in Cali, what makes us think he will take care of us in: Florida, Texas, Montana, or any other state...
Fear will rob you of faith...
Fear will cripple
Fear will make us useless - incapable of moving forward
Fear moves us from God
Genesis 3:10 KJV 1900
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

1642 Anatomy Of Fear

In spite of what they say, 90% of the chronic patients who see today’s physicians have one common symptom. Their trouble did not start with cough or chest pain or hyperacidity. In 90% of the cases, the first symptom was fear.

This is the opinion of a well-known American internist as expressed in a roundtable discussion on psychosomatic medicine. This is also the consensus of a growing body of specialists. Fear of losing a job, of old age, of being exposed—sooner or later this fear manifests itself as “a clinical symptom.”

Sometimes the fear is nothing more than a superficial anxiety; sometimes it is so deep-seated that the patient himself denies its existence and makes the round of doctor to doctor, taking injections, hormones, tranquilizers and tonics in an endless search for relief.

We have seen first hand the impacts of fear in the last year...
Fear of Covid
Fear of contamination
Fear of crowds
Fear of company
A Nation has been crippled by
Fear of Church
According to a 2020 Barna Report
35% are still and only attending their pre-covid church
14% have switched churches from their pre-covid church
32% have stopped attending church during covid
18% are viewing multiple churches throughout the month
Of the Online viewers - 50% of millenials say that they have not watched a service in the last 4 weeks...
This idea that everyone who used to be faithful to church are showing the same faithfulness online is not a reality...
I have had people tell me they were watching online, and then come up to church and share with me that I need to deal with certain topics that are going on in the world… - I just looked at the individual and said - “So you weren’t in church on Sunday online were you… Because I preached a message on the topic… Oh, oh, I just missed that one…
Fear has caused us to change our habits, and our good habits have been replaced with bad habits...
Pastor - I’m not doing anything bad - “good becomes bad when it keeps you from following the commands of God...
Hebrews 10:25 KJV 1900
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
if you are sick, weak, have a weak immunity, I can understand why you have to be cautious in who you are around...
But most of the people who are claiming that are still getting together with friends
still going to work… (you don’t know the health practices of everyone)
still going to walmart, home depot, starbucks,
Fear has changed so many people, that they don’t even realize what has happened...
Fear
2. Flight
David fled...
1 Samuel 21:10–11 KJV 1900
10 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
David fled...
1 Samuel 22:1–2 KJV 1900
1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. 2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
This man who stood and faced...
Lion
Bear
1 Samuel 17:32–36 KJV 1900
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
Giant of Gath
Philistines - the enemies of God’s people
David’s enemies:
Psalm 56:5–6 KJV 1900
5 Every day they wrest my words: All their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, They mark my steps, When they wait for my soul.
Davids enemies:
Twisted his words....
Thought evil against him
gathered together… can you see them… looking his way, turning and talking…wispering…
phone calls and texts that are about someone...
avoidance -
don’t make eye contact...
They are watching every step - “they mark my steps”
they are waiting and looking for a mis-step of some kind
They desire for you to fall, fail, falter
(How wicked… that people would want someone to fail)
so they could get some weird, evil sense of pleasure…, so they could attack, undermine - destroy...
These people are in company with the evil one...
“…accuser of the brethren...” rev 21.10
1 Peter 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
They wait for your soul...
their desire is for your destruction… - absolute
This was the cause of the fear...
This was the cause of the flight...
Blessed be God - He isn’t against us… He is FOR US...
3. For
“…this I know; for God is FOR ME”
God is for you...
No matter your situation
No matter your condition
God is for you...
