By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2: 3-6 - We are starting our new sermon series the 10 Commandments which is important to understand how these rules of conduct impact the world -The 10 commandments were provided as a code of conduct that builds a relationship with God, honors family, protects life and secures properties -John wrote that following Jesus is not just in words but in keeping God's commandments -The first 4 commandments are between humans and God and the other 6 commandments are for relationships with other people -This is how we know if someone is truly walking with God if he/she is living a life that reflect God attributes of love and mercy -So you can lie to yourself if you say I am follower of Jesus but the way you conduct your life does not reflect how God live here on earth THE BEGINNING - Before we start, let us understand that we were all created by God in His image and likeness (Gen 1: 26) -So before the 10 commandments humanity had already the laws in their DNA, disobedience with Adam and Eve (Gen 3) Murder with Cain and Abel (Gen 4) Sexual immorality and wickedness (Gen 6) -Some people say that since these events were before the 10 commandments and there was no law that therefore there was no sin but God's laws are in us because He created us -Who teaches a child to feel guilty when they lie? Or steal? Or disobey their parents? It’s because we are all born with God's laws in our DNA They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them Romans 2:15 - The bible is telling us that the law is in our hearts whether you believe in God or not, everyone has the knowledge of good and evil - Paul writes in the book of Romans that some people even use the knowledge of these laws to feel guilty for their sins or excuse their sins based on their own interpretation of God’s law (cheating or excuse for marijuana as God creation) - We start now with the first commandment but also understanding the nature for God’s laws in our lives And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:2-3 - God starts explaining to Israel and to us that He is the only God and there shouldn’t be any other Gods - In that time, society was filled with polytheistic religions (poly = many; theos = God) - God's commandments start with putting the focus on a genuine relationship with Him and He made sure that no other gods exist - Humans are always looking for a god and create our their imagination a god, even Israel while waiting for Moses to come down Mt.Sinai couldn’t wait any longer and built a golden cow to worship - We all have a moral compass that should point North towards God but some people have their compass pointing North East, North west or even just south - God, the father, the son and the Holy Spirit and there is no other God and everything starts with God the creator. - If you have a problem believing this commandment then every other commandment will be obsolete and you have established your laws and your rules - This first commandment is simple, GOD COMES FIRST.
