FOCUS

Most people who are familiar with story of Jesus are at least somewhat aware of the beatitudes at the beginning of what’s come to be called “The Sermon on the Mount.” They are Christ’s call to kingdom life in a fallen world … a life that distinguishes His own as His own. Each “attitude of being” carries a promise affirming the blessing of which it speaks. Just as the eight qualities describe every Christian (at least in the ideal), so the eight blessings are given to every Christian. The first of these eight beatitudes deals with something that doesn’t sound much like a blessing to our ears: be “poor in spirit.”

One of the realities that will hopefully become clearer & clearer as we spend the next several Sunday’s together will be that putting our trust in God calls us to be who He calls us to be & to do what He calls us to do in every way for the rest of our lives.

The Poor in Spirit …

1. simply acknowledge their true condition.

Someone who’s poor in spirit is someone who’s honest & aware.

Matthew 5:3

2. experience God’s priorities, passion & perspectives.

Apart from responding to & participating in God’s kingdom, there’s no real wealth.

Revelation 3:17-22

Making It Real

1] Is this your declaration & default concerning yourself?

2] What attitudes & actions in your life need to be flagged & forsaken today?

Action Step

Write a prayerful response to God concerning His call to be poor in spirit as well as His

challenge to anything in your life that would compromise your ability to do so.
