OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER
1) To examine Peter’s detailed description of false teachers
2) To be aware of their techniques in leading others astray, and their sad end
3) To ascertain whether or not these false teachers had ever been true Christians
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
1. What are the main points in vs. 1-11 of this chapter?
The destructiveness of false teachers (1-3)
The doom of false teachers (4-9)
The depravity of false teachers (10-17)
2. What does Peter warn that false teachers will do? (1)
Secretly bring in destructive heresies
Even denying the Lord who bought them
3. What impact will such false teachers have? (2)
Many will follow their destructive ways
The way of truth will be blasphemed
4. Teachers will exploit people by the truth and teaching them to live in their means (3).
NO
And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
5. What three examples does Peter use to illustrate the doom of false teachers? (4-6)
The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah turned into ashes
The angels who sinned and were cast down to hell
The ancient world destroyed by the flood
and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.
6. Lot was oppressed by living in Sodom every day seeing and hearing the filthy conduct of wicked? (7-8)
YES
7. What two things does the Lord know to do? (9)
How to deliver the godly out of temptations
How to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment
8. Angles are unwilling to do bring positive accusations against dignitaries before the Lord? (11)
YES
Why are people, even those who profess to be Christians, so easily manipulated by false teachers?

S. Sherrod: False teachers do not present with devil's horns. False teachers come in alluring packages and they are appealing. Matthew 7:15 states "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves." We must remain alert that we are being taught according to the word of God. Acts 17:11 - Search the scriptures daily and find out if these things are true.

C. Taylor: People are easily manipulated because they gravitate to what they want to hear instead of the truth or they want to be entertained. God's word speaks of those with itching ears. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV) states

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
